Dual Mass Flywheel
« on: 19 April 2011, 18:50:45 »

Just a general query really, what are the symptoms of one of these units failing? If, when the time comes, I need to replace the clutch on my DTi I would hate to find on parting the engine and gearbox that the DMF also is failing.....

noise that sounds like a thrust bearing, vibration at certain points of the rev range, or shunt from the driveline take up i.e when pulling away or changing gear are the most common failures,
when you get the clutch out you can move the two halves against each other(rotate)and check the amount of movement that is in there and whether or not its a smooth movement

edit forgot!! sometimes you get a "clonk" when using the starter motor!!

That sounds reassuring for both the DTi's then as neither has those symptoms!

Incidently, the bite point on the Estate's clutch is much more defined after burning it a little bit reversing up a field with the caravan attached on wet grass up a slope.  ::) ;D

what are the supposed advantages of a dual mass flywheel over the old style sprung clutch plate, DMFs seem to fail no matter what make of car they're fitted to.

I won't mention auto vs manual in this question  ::) ::) ::) ::)

The smell of burning clutch lingers for a little while!  ;D

Jane was busy telling me that she hoped I hadn't ruined THE clutch.... then I reminded her that it's HER clutch, mine is on the driveway in Solihull....  ;D

"supposedly" smoother drivetrain i.e less vibration and easier clutch takeup it also balances engine vibration that they couldnt be bothered to cure on manufacture ::) gives the whole drivetrain, g.box rop and rear axle a smaller shock loading, supposedly!!!!! :y

Errr ummm,

Hello my love..

It's not hidden... there's just no point leaving it handy 'cause the temptation is too great..... You are welcome to use it - currently needs 70L of V Power in it though....  ;D

No need for that ancient Cog technology with a 'proper' engine under the bonnet ;D

DMF's on Omegas are pretty bullet proof TBH.

The best indicator is a clonk on startup......
