Took the Omega into the aircon specialist today as I noticed it had stopped working.  The garage found no refrigerant in the system which was last topped up 2 years ago.  They suspect a leak but, with the car running for half an hour, couldn't find any UV dye escaping.  The best they could suggest was to wait and see whether the refrigerant escapes again and then locate the leak by finding dye staining.  I've ordered a UV torch from ebay which I guess may help.

Air-con has to be used regularly or the seals dry out and the stuff escapes.....oh well, who needs an ozone layer anyway....... :o

You're OK with R134a, it was the old R12 that was the problem. ;) ;) ;)

could it be its leaking through the valve/s  :-/ , they have caps on an maybe thats why it wasnt found, try opening the valve if you can hear it coming out, if not check the valve under the light?  :y

Was leaking out of the low-pressure fill (I think that's what it's called anyway  :-/) valve on mine - as found by AndyB when he took the dust cap off.  If he hadn't have done, I'd have had a job of finding the leak as wouldn't have thought of checking that!

Anyway, ordered the new valve (about £6), banged it on, got it re-charged, and jobs a good un!  :y

can you just buy the valve by its own? oh well you learn something new everyday. if not too much trouble can you give me the part number for that valve!  :y

Yes, the valve is available on its own, though the A/C experts might tell you that you need the complete pipe assembly too. andyc found the part number for me for this valve (ie the larger ally valve at the front of the car). I'll see if I can dig the receipt out tomorrow.  :y

generally air con in cars due to rubber hoses lose around 4 percent per year so in theory when a car comes to ten years old it would have ost 40 percent of it's gas but before that happens you should hear the click of the clutch coming on and off which is the sign for low gas apart from that otherwise i would geuss at a leak faster than the above mentioned 4 percent

As its £6 might just give that a try before changing the whole ac pipe, although iv already sourced a whole pipe from Albs  :D

Ahh, the old R134a ploy!  Now I don't feel so bad.. :-? apart from its £70 to re-fill it.   Doh!  :-?

My local stealers wanted hundreds of pounds to replace the pipe when I had a leaking valve.  :o :o :o

Valve replaced for a few quid, regassed and sorted.  ;)

From experience with other cars, don't air con systems need to be charged every 2 years anyway? Or is this me being stooopid?

It doesn't give you much confidence when even the dealers with access to EPC & TIS don't know what parts are available.  :-? :-?

been using my 97 silver car today on a hot Spanish day. Air con doesn't work.

Other 97 car has NEVER had air con regassed and is still working very well. I guess I would notice a difference if it was regassed.
