BMW X25TD Engine Overheating Problem
« on: 27 April 2011, 00:08:16 »

Looking for help if possible.
Have 1996 2.5td Auto Elite with BMW engine. Had the guide pulley fail and was replaced with tensioner and belts in garage. But car keeps overheating since and goes to the red after about 15mins.
Trying to locate the thermostat on the X25TD engine to check. Have a Haynes Workshop Manual but doesn't cover the BMW Engine :S
Any ideas as to where it is? I Want to eliminate Thermostat 1st otherwise will check water pump.

Have they bleed the system properly.
The stat is at the top of the engine below the black pipe that has turbo diesel written on it 3X10mm bolts and its off.
The water pump is behind the viscous fan. :y

Stat is in the plastic elbow where bottom rad hose meets block.

Usual reasons for these to overheat are (in order):
1) failed/failing waterpump (vanes tend to break off)
2) previous poor servicing - the oil must be changed at least every 4.5k, ideally every 3k. The oil is a critical part of the cooling system on these
3) sludged up radiator

15mins sounds like a couple of the impellor blades have broken on the water pump to me?
