Had Miggy back at auto transmission specialist who has said he tested the solenoids and says they are fine. Is now very doubtful that the torque converter is at fault as the P0743 is electrical and he thinks next step should be to replace gearbox ECU. Anyone think this will cure the problem or is this just a guessing game.

Sounds like he's guessing or preparing to empty your wallet.

Googling for P0743 brings up lots of threads about "P0743 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical".

Generic readers can give misleading codes. You really need someone with Tech2 (who knows how to read it) to check.

Agreed. I can only recall us ever seeing one gearbox ECU failure.

Something is up with the lockup clutch solenoid or the wiring to and from it, at a guess.

Tech 2 will probably give more info - was it an open / short circuit / high / low voltage, etc. and is fault currently present or stored.

He's still jumping to a massive conclusion to say it's the ECU. The ECU would pick up a momentary break in the circuit (maybe it's a wiring problem that only shows up when hot, or when the drivetrain shifts in response to engine torque) whereas I assume he's put a mutimeter on it and concluded that it's fine.

Beginning to think you's might be right and will have to take a wee trip up to see Hotel 21 in the near future.

Would be worth getting the whole story from a proper Tech2, IMHO.

Check the codes and clear them, then take it for a spin and see which codes come back. :y

Please can you describe how your car drives? And I know I am new but deal with mechanical issues regularly although am not a mechanic by trade, and out of curiosity have you changed the oil in the gearbox?

I doubt we'll get much sense any time soon, suggested a visit to h21 bloody weeks ago.

Can lead a hoarse to water but....

Do not have the finances to drive the miggy about 180 mile round trip just for a diagnoses. Hence the reason I could not get it to H21! weeks ago.

In limp mode starts in 3rd. Advised to change solenoid, so both sumps removed and full ATF change at this time.

Anyone know how I would check the wiring from the solenoid to transmission ECU. would love to know how its routed

If you want to get your car plugged in for diagnostics you can eithes spend around £20 and buy a reader yourself from Ebay OBDII U380, or Places like Kwik Fit will do it for a fee around the £35 mark last time I went in. (AGES AGO). Luckily I have a mate with a reader who does all my cars free.
