Why won't it start...?
« on: 24 May 2011, 22:42:16 »

Hello folks...

I know someone's going to know the answer...

I've recently added a lovely '94 reg 2.5CDX to my collection, beautiful condition, essentially one owner and 85000 on the clock. Most things seem to work pretty much as they should.

However whilst out last week, after turning the engine off with no warning of any problem, it wouldn't start again five minutes later. Cranked over okay, but no sign of life. AA took a look and didn't manage to find a spark, so towed me home. Also, I'm not sure I hear the fuel pump running.

Just done the paperclip test as described helpfully on here expecting to get 19 - incorrect RPM. I've had crank sensor failure before on another V6 and assumed it would be that again. However I only got 12 - sequence commencing and 31 - no RPM signal, which I assume positively indicates the crank sensor does work.

No other codes came up.

There was no preceeding fault, however there is an oddity with the immobiliser in that the car cranks and starts immediately after unlocking but if you remove the key and try to start again (ie, after filling up at a station etc.) the cabin monitoring light will be lit, and the car won't crank. Press the button on the key, wait for a relay somewhere in the cab to "click" and away you go.

I think that's okay, because I'm still getting that to happen, and the car's cranking okay.

Where do I start...DIS pack? Immobiliser? Fuel pump/relay?

I've a complete '96 V6 Elite (3.0 though) from which I can substitute parts to test, so who has ideas where to look?

I really want to get this old girl running again because sadly I prefer her to the 27000 mile 3.2 Elite I bought a couple of weeks later....what a muppet I must be!

Thanks for helping,

Julian

Crank sensor has to be the chief suspect.Expect a code 19. :y

I would still say crank sensor...code 19 doesnt always come up even when its failing...

Code 31 is no crank signal which you will always get when doing the test without the engine on...engines not on, cranks not cranking...so no signal :y

.....okay, you think it could still be crank sensor even though I got no fault codes at all?

I've replaced two on my current car in the seven years that I've owned it and it didn't show a fault code at all either time. I only guessed what it was after having one let me down on my previous mini facelift omega, which did show code 19.  :-/

At least I had re-routed it as per guide so it made it so much easier to replace. I turned it around on its bracket so that I don't have to remove the scuttle panel to get at it now.  :y :y

hmm....I get the message here!

I guess I'm kind of relieived - I was dreading working out how to out-wire the immobiliser.

Looks like I'll need to change the sensor and see what happens.

okay, just before I throw money at my local VX dealer for a new crank sensor, I've remembered something.

Although I haven't had this car long, I'd noticed that the engine seems to cut at around 4250RPM or thereabouts.
Maybe the rev limiter cutting in? I couldn't tell properly because I backed off the rev's to regain drive. Is this likely to be connected, or another fault to pursue?

Before dismantling too much to get at the sensor I've double checked - definately no spark, and the fuel pump doesn't run either. I've proved the relay to be good, and linked the pump directly to power to check it runs, which it does.

Does a dead crank sensor switch off both the ignition and the feed to the fuel pump then?

Thanks for your continued help.

as far as im aware, if the c/s doesnt detect rotation then the fuel pump is cut. ;)
