Sounds like someone has disconnected the alarm horn, perhaps because of false activations, remove the scuttle panel and wiper arms to check.

Already done that and it was plugged in correctly.
At 4 in the morning here is is dead quiet and I then heard it very faintly (almost impossibe to hear at all) sounding.
As it obviously sounds why is it so low? I know it has internal batteries which are sealed in and irreplacable  :-/but surely when it is activated it should take its power from the main battery and only from the internal ones when the battery is disconnected?

You should have two horns.
One, as you say, is designed to run from internal batteries (they are replaceable, it's just awkward to do - should be a guide somewhere on this Forum).
The other is just a regular looking horn that should sound whenever the alarm is activated.
Either the horn is missing, disconnected, or it's been water damaged.

I have exactly the same problem on mine (2.0l estate) but haven't investigated it yet as it has more pressing things that need doing.
