When is overheating not overheating
« on: 21 June 2011, 15:41:48 »

The temp gauge sometimes rises rapidly even under gentle driving. I have had a new rad water pump and stat fitted a few months ago. As the pump was leaking and the rad only got warm at the top, it had got seriously hot but not into the red, when towing my caravan. I wonder if the temp sender is playing up the reading will rise and then suddenly drop back to normal then maybe rise back up and down. It happens very quickly.A bit like a second hand on a watch.  THe fluid levels are fine with nothing nasty in the coolant (mayo)

Hm.... as the guage rises and falls with that sort of rapidity I reckon it is probably just the temp sender being the culprit or the wiring to it is intermitently going to earth (shorting) because that is the only logical explanation. Water cannot heat and then cool as quickly as you say it is.
Check your temp sender wiring by taking it off the sender and earthing it which should make the temp guage fly immediately to the top, then down to the bottom when it is taken away from the earth. if that happens then change your temp sender.
Sorry that the job is a pig of one though but that is the mig all over...... :y

Thanks for your reply I didn't think  for 1 minute it would be doddle. Where abouts on a 2.5TD is this devilish sender unit

not to sure it is actually a fault? boith of mine do similar things and its only the leccy fans cutting in or backing off the throttle which cause it to suddenly drop, dont forget the turbo makes a hell of a lot of heat when blowing hard, and towing a caravan wil make it work hard!!! you dont actually say how high the gauge is going?

because of the design of the said gauge a few degrees hotter makes the gauge zing up the scale, and it looks frightening, on mine its only 4 or 5 degrees difference between normal running and the top temp it hits? if changing the sender unit makes a difference please let me know!! i will change mine!! :y
