if a 3rd brake light is fitted and connected, it needs to be working to pass an MOT

my brother bought an aftermarket spoiler for his Lex, it has the brakelight but his car already has the 3rd brakelight, so he plans to remove the one on the spoiler and blank it out and spray over it

Why would you remove it, are you thinking of fitting one of those spoilers that sits flush at the top of the rear window, i have seen these and they look pretty good.

that's the plan,

whilst the bumper is being repainted as well as one of the door bottoms (tiny bit of bubbling appearing) i thought about doing something subtle.

looking on fleabay i saw a company who sell them and also black grilles, for both, including shipping it comes out at £99.
but looking at the rear brake light this would cover it and i don't want to get into a situation where i have to pull off the spoiler as it will be bonded onto the glass

Why don't you go for a Stenmetz roof spoiler? ....oops just had a look and they are no longer available :-/

 no mate its led so has no effect on check control jay !!

Probably. I don't know if things have changed but rear number plate lights didn't have to be fitted - a mate used to have a Datsun something SSS that didn't have one from the factory - but they ahd to work if fitted.

I'm thinking of removing it completely.

The spoiler comes down enough of the window to ensure that when stood at the back of the car you wouldn't see that there was one supposed to be fitted

When mine had a single element failed my mechanic took the whole thing out for the MOT, put it back after...

It passed fine as no light fitted, if it's there it has to work properly .. but it doesn't have to be there .. if you get my drift !!!

Its a bit like front fogs, not normally tested but are fitted. They only check what they have to
Side repeaters is something that if fitted must work, but i don,t make the rules

if i get the spoiler then i will go down the route of taking it out, that way they can't fail something that isn't there
