decat for v6
« on: 30 June 2011, 22:42:21 »

Hi people, just want to know if it's possible to decat my 2000 3.0 v6? I have a mate who can make me 2 pipes in a jig for a measly sum of money, but after looking through the forum it doesn't seem like anyone has done it.

What's the deal?

It has been done but be warned... The MOT regulations are changing and if a vehicle is supposed to have a cat and there isn't one it will fail, regardless of whether it passes the emissions test ;) ;)

Thats not such an issue as i will replace the cats for mots. All I want to make sure is that the car will run ok without them in and not throw up fault codes or run like a sack of poo

Sounds like an awful lot of work to me (swapping the front pipes twice a year) but that's up to you ;)

I can't see any real reason why there'd be problems, although you may have to tamper with the Lambda sensors to prevent them playing with the fuelling :-/ :-/

For any additional power that you may gain, is it really worth it???  Only really talking about 5bhp really tops isn't it???

To be fair I don't do the work myself a good mate of mine does it in his spare time at his work no fee :y

I know the gains aren't supposed to be much but i've done it on a lot of previous cars and the results have been pretty astounding in terms of improved driveability and low down torque and my thoughts are that the omega has done 150k on its original cats so they must be pretty blocked up and inefficient by now so a decat should release a lot more than 5bhp and hopefully restore some low down grunt as mine is seriously lacking in that department especially for a 3.0

I've now owned 2 de-catted 3.0 MV6's (1 converted by myself and 1 bought already de-catted. I found with both of them the low down torque suffers a lot but the high end power is slightly improved. I believe the torque is lost due to the drop in back pressure. In both instances i've put the cats back on as I couldn't live without the torque and it was too noisy (although it did sound quite throaty). Maybe with a remap the decat pipes could be beneficial.

I still have a pair of decat pipes in the garage if anyone wants to have a go themselves  :)

*Just to add if you don't have much low down torque your multiram system may not be functioning correctly it would be worth having a look in the How 2 section and checking yours is plumbed in correctly and switchover solenoids are operating  :y

agreed.. tried the same, the car become sluggish on  low revs.. not useful in city traffic..and consumption suffers.. :-/
