Won't rev past 3,000 rpm when warm
« on: 03 July 2011, 12:03:51 »

Hiya, hope you fellas can help.

Taken the car out for its first run since buying it and noticed that when the car is warm it appears to hit the equivalent of the rev limiter at about 3,200 rpm - feels/sounds the same as rev limiter. Didn't do it when warming up, but felt that it wasn't revving freely up to 5,000 rpm compared to any other V6 Ive ever owned (Vauxhalls, Fords, Jeeps etc). In addition, the "gearbox/transmission" orange dash light comes on at the restricted revs (its a manual). Gets back home and it does the same 3,200rpm limit when stationary but with no gearbox/transmission light.

Any help with this is much appreciated.

The restrictive revs is the car going into safe mode to protect itself as it recognises a fault that could damage the engine...

Read this guide Paperclip Test and Pedal Trick to learn how to read the fault codes without using a code reader.

Come back and tell us what the fault codes are for advice on how to fix them  :y

Sorry fella, got my interpretation of lights mixed up (no owners manual). Its the EML light :-[

Its a 2.5V6 so i don't think i can do the spanner light test.

Done the paperclip test with just the ignition on and again with the engine running. Both times i got a code of 19 and no other codes. Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Code 19 is a failing/failed crank shaft sensor. You really should consider replacing ASAP with a genuine Vauxhall sensor before the car lets you down completely.  ;) ;) ;)

Cheers for that fella, would this be the sensor shown in the link below that sits just to the right of the intake plenum behind the right hand cam

Your link isn't working, but it's next to the oil filter, the plug/socket is at the back of the engine towards the passenger side at the top.  :y

Yup! Got an Autobahn Stormers TC so hpefullt not too expensive. Had a look underneath and found the sensor in a nice easy place (just where you said). Looks a bit of a b*tch to get to topside, so might tie some wire to the end of the old one to act as a draw wire for the new.

Cheers again fella  :y

There was a post just a day or so ago about this (can't find it though)  >:(

The wiring going to the back of the engine is set up in a way that it'll almost be impossible to get it out, let alone follow the original path with the new one!

The suggestion was to route it via the inner wing heading up then along the back to the block. Obviously avoiding sharp edges and hot pipes etc  :y

Yep, Viper is right.

Better to re-route it, as it's original path encounters a lot of heat (hence premature failure).

Many thanks for the heads up on the routing fellas :y

Will take the advice and re-route as suggested. I take it that the new sensor cable will need extending, so will solder suitable heat spec cable and heat shrink it.

Cheers again :y

iirc, there was no mention of needing to extend the wiring. I believe it'll be a case of using the available wiring to the best you can, again avoiding hot/sharp points!
