brought a new belf from euro carparts for £18.30 including vat for a continental belt,
please advise on fitting, im guesing i have to slacken the alternator to get the belt on and then move it back to make it tight,
is this the right way to do it?
and how tight must it be, i have limited tools so was just going to stretch it as tight as i can
please help me

I need new batteries in my crystal ball ............ what engine do you have?       

The aux belt tensioner on a V6 is the top left pulley (as you face the front of the car) You need a 15mm socket/spanner, levering it to the right will give enough slack in the belt to remove the old belt - and obviously fit your new belt  Fit the belt over the water pump pulley last as this is smooth ie doesn't have a lip to get the belt over. Release 15mm socket/spanner. That's it! the spring in the tension tensions the belt, no other adjustment needed, especially the alternator. 

I beleive 4 pot cars are similar.  :-/

i have failed!
the belt itself seemed way too long but after some fiddling i think ive sussed it out, am i correct on thinking that it doubles over itself a few times???
i im having extreme problems with getting the belt tight as i dont know which pully is the tensioner ? im thinking that its the one with a smooth edge but i just cant move it at all!!!!!
is there a special way to move the tensioner as there is very little room under the bonnet to get at it, i may have to remove some hoses and air con parts just to get at it!
ffs not having my car is becoming a right headache

the tensioner is the top left pully above the alternator (looking at car from the front) on the 2.6 facelift you will have to take off the bracket on the bottom right as the belt runs through it...fitting new belt.....start at the air con pump (bottom right) then at the same time run the belt up over the power steering (top right) and bottom main pully,,hold the belt on the bottom and run the belt straght across the top and round the tensioner (top left)then down round the alternator(bottom left) then just flip the last loop of belt over the water pump (the smooth on in the middle)......the water pump runs of the back of the belt,,,hope you understand this...

thanks for the advise, im going to call it quits and wait for my mate who is a mechanic to finish work and he will do it for me hopefullly, things gone from bad to worse as i have trapped the old bet in the bonnet while closing it and now can not bloody open the thing!
ive really peed myself off with this and feel a cup of tea and a nice fat one coming on
i am definatly going to invest in rac cover or similar as they could have had this sorted for me by now, im just happy that the belt snapped at home and not when i was miles from home as i would have been propper buggered then,
all the pullys seem to turn fine appart from the one right at the bottom of the engine, i hope this is normal and not yet another problem to fix

he said it is a2.2dti not a V6. On the 2.2dti's the tensioner is middle lower right and iirc they can be a sod but don't think they have smooth pully, the tenioner has a shock type appearance to it

O my, ,i dont do diesel`s they smell and leave big black round shapes on my nice clean white garage door

So....what caused the belt to snap is the first question I am thinking of......hows the aircon compressor pulley and alternator.

Anyway, the belt routing is this (I think!)



And the tensioner is tight, often needs a breaker bar and socket (19mm?) to shift it.

the wheel in the pic with cs on it is the one that wont move, the air con and alternator speen freely, i dont know what caused the belt to snap as didnt happen when driving, i just jumped in the car and the steering was really hard and noticed the snapped belt

CS is crankshaft pulley. If the car is in gear ? it wont really move. If its in neutral it should move, although there will be quite a bit of resisitance.
Check that WP (water pump) also spins freely.

everything else spins freely and yes the car was in gear its a habbit of mine to leave in 1st gear when parked as the handbrake has not always worked very well on my car

Put it in neutral and then try to turn it. If it doesnt turn you have bigger problems than a broken aux. belt - ie seized engine. ..............pretty unlikely tbh.
