hi guys,

i need a new rear passenger tyre.

firstly what's the minimum? this tyre is currently at 2mm and iirc it's 1.6 mm the minimum???

also, the place i get tyres at say that i can't buy a single tyre (all others have loads of tread) and that i have to buy a set of two. is this correct?

1.6mm is the minimum yes.

You can replace tyres individually if needed.  But it's recommended to replace in pairs and use the same tyres.

Last winter I had 4 new tyres fitted all round, 1 blew out from a puncture two weeks later.  I just replaced that tyre as the rest were pretty much brand new anyway.

no thats rubbish
but sometimes it can be cheaper to buy 2 if they have deals on.

ok thanks for the info guys.

basically the other tyres are so much better that it really is just the one needed. anyone know where i can go to get the best deal on a single tyre?

Like its been said, ideally change 2 at a time but the choice is yours.

While im lucky with a local "pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap" tyre dealer i have used the company below.

Check you local Thompsons or Yellow Pages for places tha tsell nearly new tyres - a little more risky but should have some form of guarantee - this way you may get something that is a match for ware of your existing tyres.

What I would say is the immense wisdom of having comparable types of tyres (ideally the same make / model) of tyre on each axle.

Total perfection is to have 4 tyres of the same brand / model as this always (in my opinion) settles the car down SO much better.

Single tyres are fine in the UK, your common sense will keep you safe. 

This doesn't apply in France, least of all the common sense bit.  Driving a Transit, I had a blow-out over there a couple of years ago and put on the manky, mis-matched spare to get me to the nearest tyre place.  The tyre fitter wanted to sell me an axle pair but I eventually persuaded him to supply a single tyre of identical make and model to the other three.  But he absoultely refused to fit the original rim and new tyre to the van. 

Why?  He said it would be illegal to fit a new tyre to the same axle as an existing part worn one, due to the difference in tread depth.   Yet it was legal to leave my dodgy spare on the van, forcing me to continue on the mis-matched tyre and change it myself later using the flimsy emergency jack. 

Let's hope we don't end up following Europe in this madness.

Know of a place near here that sells s/h for £30. Would never buy tyres from him though: Can't balance, can't refit wheel bolts, can't vouch for the tyres either. 

£25 well spent me thinks.

Whatever happened to the Customer Service? It is the cutomer who decides how many, not some tosser or company who wants to make more profit and there is NO legislation at this time to demand you to fit them in pairs. All they have to be is the same type (radial probably) and size.
I always change mine at 3mm to ensure that I have the safety of a decent grip in wet conditions because I have noticed that at the legal minimum of 1.6mm it affected the grip considerably and particularly in the wet.
Go somewhere else, but first tell the pillock that that is what you will do if he will not do as requested.
Its their loss and your gain.
