Secondary Air Injection pump - needed ????
« on: 08 July 2011, 14:44:26 »

Hiya, as per title really. On start up for about 15 secs I get a noise that i'm pretty sure is the secondary air injection pump. Can anyone advise what this does....or if i even need it  :-/ :-/

Any help much appreciated :y

Its not needed, just reach up into the wheel arch and disconnect the pump,it's put there to help with emissions when cold :y

Has anyone stripped down one of these air pumps & replaced bearings ....... assuming that it's possible to do so. Mine is screaming on start up too .......... just wondering as I've never even seen one  ;)

DLK disconected mine and removed some of the plumbing last September  :y

Car runs perfectly well without it  ;)

Andy, I'm not sure that the noise is bearings.  Ages back I came across this thread on another forum:
http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/141240.aspx

As you'll see if you read it, the problem (on what looks to be a very similar if not identical pump to the Omega's) is that the casing rivets fail, leading to a high pressure air leak when it's running.  Fix is to replace rivets with bolts.

I haven't actually tried this, as our pump doesn't make any untoward noises, despite about 177k on the clock.

It would be (gently) interesting to know if anyone with a noisy one on - or off - an Omega shows the same failure.

Thanks for the link, very interesting. It could very well be an air leak rather than bearings. I'll look into it.   :y  :y  :y

Thanks again for all the advice fellas. Have disconnected it and noise gone, doesn't seem to have altered the performance at all. Os it just fitted for ballast  :)

Thanks again  :y :y

Usually bearing failure on Omegas. I have tried prising them apart without success, The impellers are press fitted onto the shaft and are too fragile to lever off.
I ran without one for a while, seemed to lose a bit of mpg so refitted and saw a definite improvement but this is for short distance commute of 6 miles in winter so I think it is due to going closed loop slightly quicker as a result of cats warming up quicker.
