Just drove all the way to Austria some 800 odd miles absolutely fine, 34 mpg, not a hitch, then last 30 or so miles I start to hear a rumbling from the off-side front!!! At low speed, when going round bends. Also when braking, checked pads, all ok. grabbed wheel & rocked it top to bottom. sounded like there was some play in it!  Now I know Miggys have their problems but I didn't count on wheel bearings only done 55k (got a spare crankshaft sensor) does it sound likely? cant think of anythin else. & what tools would I need if I can find a replacement part? is it easier to do the whole hub than just bearing?

It certainly sound, from what you say, like a wheel bearing...

Having never changed one on an Omega I am not sure what tools are needed, someone will be along to give more help soon, good luck.....

Did one recently ... not technically difficult at all but a bit of a sod ...

Old bearing would not come off at all .. ended up having to angle grind a slot in it and use some serious force on it...

New one needs to be torqued to 320 NM so had to hire a large torque wrench

Managed to fubar the ABS sensor by my own carelessness .. replacing that was another sod of a job ..

Get an assistant to hold their foot on the brake and test again... If the play disappears then it's definitely the bearing, if it stays then look at ball joint or upper strut mounting.

Certainly sounds like a bearing but seems rather low mileage for one to have gone :-/

Well, just got back from the OPel dealers (really couldn't be arsed doin it myself & wasting a days holiday) Their mechanic has checked it over spending over an hour on it. Went for a test drive, came back, had it up on the ramps wheels checked, all the bushes, drop linksetc...  front & back springs, & wheel bearings. He stated that there is no play in any of the bearings at all! He did say however that the outside leading edge of the offside tyre was chewing slightly which may cause the rumbling sound. He stated that the wishbones although are ok for the time being are past their best and theres a tiny amount of play in them which could be causing the issue??? Does that seem about right.??

He seemed very professional and gave the steering & suspension a good going over, & I wish they were like that back home. He even asked did I want to sell it

the dealers abroad seem far better than back home . i broke down in germany a few years back due to a gearbox prob on a sierra gt i had . took it to the ford dealer to look at , they drove us to a local hotel and picked us back up the next day .. great service  .. lucky if ya get a taxi phone number here

We've got a few more days in Austria, then on to Germany again to see some of the misses's family then drive back to Rotterdam to catch the ferry back to Blighty. Then its a case of MOT time for the misses Focus & major work on the miggy's suspension. Gonna go the whole hog - new wishbones, springs & shocks all round. Then some new tyres me thinks. Want to keep it, so I'm gonna give it a treat.
