3.0l OVER HEATING! Aghhhh!!!!!
« on: 13 July 2011, 09:40:15 »

Hi Guys,
After not using my 3.0 MV6 facelift for just over two years. NOW is the time to get her back on the road.
When I was forced to stop using it (broken clutch and no money) I kept runing it up on my drive every now and then 'til it run dry! Last weekend, I charged the battery, put 20liters of fuel in the tank, crossed my fingers and turned the key. She fired straight up!!! :-))))
I let it run for a while and it's as smooth as it ever was!
Having a look around, making sure this still worked, then I noticed there was not heat coming from the vents and the temp gauge went upto 100!!!!! I topped up the coolant (1.5 liters) but this made no change??? The rad' fans were runing there nuts off, I think all the hoses are hot, I couldn't see any bubbles in the header tank and no steam from the exhaust..... Can you advise please????

Could well be the coolant has caused sludge etc in the system for being stood for so long.

My advise would be to drop all the coolant and run a hose into the header tank and leave it running for a while with rad drain plug opened .That way you should be able to flush the system. Then refill with decent 50/50 mix and post up results.Water pump may have crud and muck around it causing poor circulation..good flush should cure it.

Thanks, I will try that.
Also, I did read on another forum the the heater bypass valve can fail and make the engine look like it's over heating??? Any ideas on that????

Given the fact that the car has been stood for a fair while without being driven getting everything up and running I wouldn,t rule out the HBV being at fault aswell.

First attention should really be a good flsuh through of the coolant and also an oil filter change when good and warm.

HBV is quite simple to remove if needed but get that coolant flushed first and go from there.

Ok,
When I got home, I popped the hood and started the Meega.
I had a thought and removed the filler cap from the header tank to see if it smelt exhausty (I know, not a real word, lol...)
I gave it a few rev's and noting much happened and I couldn't smell anything but after a while the thing just gushed about 2 liters of water all over my feet.....
Could this be a symptom of an air lock? It heats up to a point that it expands and spits the coolant out???
Tomorrow I will borrow a coolant analyser to check properly.
Anymore ideas????
I wanna get this thing back on the road and get to some shows...  :-[

Sounds like a blockage or air lock to me.

Get that coolant flushed through !!and then go from there.

Engine idling, heater set to max with fans at max, expansion cap off, keep burping top hose. If you`ve got a blockage though this won`t help

Thank you.
I did read in another thread about cleaning the system out and it said about putting dissolved dishwasher tabs in for a while, Do you think this might help shift a blockage?

Thanks for all the advice guys, been flushing and pumping and just as it gets dark, she's steady at 80 to 85 and I've melted all my trim from all the lovely hot air!

Now all I have to do is fix the clutch slave cylinder, new brakes all round, new cat' on the drivers side, full service and fix all the trim our friends in the police have wrecked....
