Got my hopes up!
« on: 02 February 2008, 06:20:02 »

Fired up the Elite this morning. As I was scraping off the ice, I thought "hang on, that lifter's a LOT quieter" :)

I drove to work, quiet motorway, cruising at 90mph for the most of it.

Got out of the car at work with the engine running, and BANG, BANG, BANG.... it's getting worse, it sounds bloody awful ;D

Tomorrow afternoon it gets stripped, Monday it gets rebuilt with a new set...

I cleaned them out, but obviously one has broken down.

I've another known good set here, I'm going to throw 'em all in there.

I'm aiming for 4 hours start to finish, including cambelt and camshaft removal / refitting...

Well don't loose heart, at least you can do it, whereas I would struggle to lift the bonnet :-/

Do you have the right type.....?

Its risky mixing and matching with the oil pumps and T vents!

When you ahev it stripped down, check the oil feeds are not blocked and that the T vents are the right ones for the oil pump.

Definately the right lifters. It's a 1999 car, and I'm using the later type lifters etc.

Sorry to sound like a dipstick(!) but where are the oil feeds / T vents  :-[

There the two torx headed plugs in the pic below:

When you fit old heads to a newer engine you have to swap the T vents over as the later tappets need greater oil flow.

When you remove one you will note that the old ones have a single hole in the side and the later ones have two which increases the oil feed to the followers.

If you have the wrong ones fitted it could be the cause of your noise....

Ahhh ok

So the T vents just unscrew with the torx head?

Both engines were the later type I'm sure of it... but I will double and triple check everything when it's all apart!

Post up any pic you have of the top of the heads you fitted and I will be able to tell you.

Chances are its an early head as the later ones approx when the oil pump was changed, had some additional metal added between the plugs to allo the fitting of coil per plug modules (for the Caterra)

What do I do from here then - put the T vents from Max's car onto this one? (nb, the heads from his car also don't seem to have the CPP holes)...

When you plan to look at the fault......take the cam covers off as the first job and check the T-vents (at least one can be removed with the cams still fitted).

If they only have one hole in the side then fit the ones from the original heads, re-build and re-try.

If they are wrong then I would think this is the problem........the oil feed to the followers is being restricted.
