What's dismaying me here is that no Vx dealership seems to recognise the HP charging point as a discrete part (they're all willing to sell me the complete pipe it is fitted into - at the fat end of 200 squids!). And none of the aircon specialists I've approached seem interested in helping me either (why on earth does it 'cost' £12 to pop am item smaller than my thumb into a Jiffy bag?!).

I guess Vx are protecting their patch by wanting to sell me a £200 part rather than one for a fiver (and the hope of getting the installation work too?). And the a/c guys are probably holding out for me to crack and simply take the car to them (in the hope - again - of vacuuming my pocket as well as my aircon!)

Sorry guys - just fancied a quick rant!! :D

Contact one of the breakers on here. ;) I dont have one but someone else might. The pipe which comes through the bulkhead and runs along the lower n/s inner wing - under the ABS ECU is not a job for the faint hearted, so I hope it isnt that one your having trouble with. If it is, do whatever it takes to source the valve rather than change the pipe. ;)

Yup! That's the one!! If I can't source a new valve I'll attempt to repair the one I've got - I sure as hell ain't gonna tackle the pipe!! :P

Might investigate a breaker if all else fails (to rob the valve off - not for the whole pipe!).

Take the part number to your local dealer, they'll get one for you in a few days - it comes with a green Viton O seal, so you don't need to order one .... like I did  ;D

Actually plonked my broken one on the parts counter at my local dealer and he just frowned and scratched his head! He pulled up their IPC and it is true - it's not shown as a separate part! To be fair I didn't have a part number to hand but I've tried a couple of online sites since and none of them recognise it.

But I just spoke to AndyC on the phone and he's on the case now. So I'm looking forward to a happy ending very soon!

I've unscrewed the charging point and taken it to a Vx dealer - it's not listed separately!

This is what it looks like......

http://s989.photobucket.com/albums/af14/GaryBC/Omega%20Pics/?action=view&current=Valve2.jpg

http://s989.photobucket.com/albums/af14/GaryBC/Omega%20Pics/?action=view&current=Valve1.jpg

It looks to me like there's a shrader valve inside it - but I can't see how to get it out.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers,
Gaz

It is available separately, I've had one. Give andyc at Drive in Bury St Edmonds a bell 01284 777222, he that sorted out a part number for me. In the mean time I'll have a look through my receipts, but I reckon you'll be faster via Andy  :y

EDIT
I shouldn't doubt myself!  ::)
I think I've found it, it's about the right price but the invoice just has 'valve' on it
Try V0052458177 and in Nov 2008 it was £4.67 +vat  :y  :y

PS you replace the whole thing. It's the other valve on top of the engine (can never remember which is high & low pressure fill point) that has a separate shrader typre vale in the middle.  :y :y

Sorry to be a pain, but could you check your typing please? I've pasted this number into half a dozen or so Vx parts sites and none of them recognise it!

Cheers

Try ditching the start and using just 52458177.

This may help:

I'm in work at the moment but will check later. Pretty sure it's right though. Just go into your dealer with it though, that's all I did, & 'my' dealer found it.

At the risk of hi-jacking this post, anyone know of a good air-con specialist in the Kingston, Surrey area, had mine re-gassed by Kwik-fit (who said their machine wouldn't recharge if there was a leak) It lasted a day! Should've known better!
By the way I did go back to complain and was told "maybe a stone hit the air-con radiator after you drove away!" Yeah right!!

Hi Chris,
we're really concerned to hear about your experience with air-con regass. Please could you private message us your contact number and someone at head office will give you a call?

Kind regards,
Gerry

Thanks to AndyC here for sourcing the right part for me, and to those who directed me at him too!

One last question. Is there a torque setting for tightening this valve? Although the valve itself is quite hard, it screws into a light alloy boss welded to the pipe - easy to screw off if not careful!

My guess would be it's a comparatively low torque setting but I'd like to find out for sure.

Cheers,
Gaz

No idea about torque settings, but as you say you're screwing it into an ally fitting on a thin walled ally pipe so go easy, little more than a nip is needed - the green Viton O ring is doing the sealing. There's a union underneath for a spanner (17mm  :-/ 19mm  :-/) to support the pipework while you remove or refit the fill valve. When tightening the valve up just remember that apart from the hassle of fitting the pipe, it's over £100 to buy new. That alone should prevent you from over tightening it.  :y :y :y :y
