A/C charging point - valve failed!
« on: 01 July 2011, 14:13:00 »

I've just taken the car in for a re-gas but the high pressure valve lets all the gas straight back out again as soon as the rig is disconnected!

The fitter tried to replace the valve but apparently it's not a 'normal' Schrader valve. He believes it's either some weird valve he's never come across before, or a non-replaceable valve that's an integral part of the pipe.

Two questions arise from this: If it's a non-typical valve, where do I get a new one (and extractor/insertion tool)? If it's part of the pipe, is it much of a job to change it and are replacement pipes (and seals) readily available?

(And there was me thinking it was going to be a quick job! Silly me!!)

I imagine he means eBay.

They're also available as Vauxhall parts (valve only) IIRC, PM 'andyc' here for a price as he's parts manager for a Vx dealership.

I also believe they are installable by competent A/C specialists as there've been a few posts here recently about just that problem..

This kind of thing:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/R134A-AIRCON-STANDARD-SCHRADER-VALVE-CORE-PACK-5-2672-/310299928528?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item483f5127d0

They are the same fitting as tyre valves but different construction to suit the refrigerant.

If your aircon bod isn't familiar with these you need a different aircon bod.   :o

The look identical - mechanically, anyway. (I guess the seal is a different rubber to a tyre valve.)

The 'bod' appeared to try his usual extractor tool on it and complained that he couldn't locate the drive dogs. I'll nick an extractor/dust cap off one of the kids' bikes tonight to see if I can get it out myself!

I've unscrewed the charging point and taken it to a Vx dealer - it's not listed separately!

This is what it looks like......

http://s989.photobucket.com/albums/af14/GaryBC/Omega%20Pics/?action=view&current=Valve1.jpg

It looks to me like there's a shrader valve inside it - but I can't see how to get it out.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers,
Gaz

It is available separately, I've had one. Give andyc at Drive in Bury St Edmonds a bell 01284 777222, he that sorted out a part number for me. In the mean time I'll have a look through my receipts, but I reckon you'll be faster via Andy  :y

EDIT
I shouldn't doubt myself!  ::)
I think I've found it, it's about the right price but the invoice just has 'valve' on it
Try V0052458177 and in Nov 2008 it was £4.67 +vat  :y  :y

PS you replace the whole thing. It's the other valve on top of the engine (can never remember which is high & low pressure fill point) that has a separate shrader typre vale in the middle.  :y :y

Thanks Andy. I've dropped AndyC a line with the part number you found for me and my pics. We should have it sorted pretty soon now.

Incidentally, the valve down underneath the battery area is the HP point, the one up by the scuttle is the LP point. (I watched the re-gas guys and kept asking questions! They must bloody hate nosy engineers!!)

Cheers,
Gaz

While waiting for AndyC's reply I've been doing some digging of my own.

Bloody can of worms this is turning out to be!! I found a website which seems to show what I want - but they list two identical looking valves.

This one......
http://www.carairconditioningsupplies.co.uk/caraircon/product.php?productid=866&cat=64&page=1

And this one...
http://www.carairconditioningsupplies.co.uk/caraircon/product.php?productid=593&cat=64&bestseller=Y

They've been next to useless in offering me any help in deciding which one to buy ("We beleive the photo you sent refers to the sku2576. This is a gm part and slightly different thread pattern to the 2574. Unfortunately we have no oe number data to check") PLUS they want to charge £10+VaT for carriage!

Until AndyC gets back to me (and to help him when he does), can anyone else suggest what I need?

As our 'heatwave' is having a tea-break I've got a little breathing space. But I'd really like to get my aircon charged up in time for when it comes back!

Cheers all,
Gaz

At the risk of hi-jacking this post, anyone know of a good air-con specialist in the Kingston, Surrey area, had mine re-gassed by Kwik-fit (who said their machine wouldn't recharge if there was a leak) It lasted a day! Should've known better!
By the way I did go back to complain and was told "maybe a stone hit the air-con radiator after you drove away!" Yeah right!!

Surprised anyone here would use them - they get such a pasting on this forum!!

Google's good for finding stuff - type in "car aircon kingston"!!

Can I have my thread back now please?
