Camcorder advice
« on: 29 January 2008, 21:58:23 »

Is this any good http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@2073988447.1201643452@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfeadedeehgjelcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&sku=868895

I'm looking for a unit for video of kids skiing in a couple of weeks and my mini dv cam qualiity is crap (Mustek £100)

Do I want one with a CD in it - not fussed about re-diting etc just point and shoot.

DVD based cameras are a bodge, that Panasonic doesn't support widescreen according to the page.

Might be worth stating the budget.

Santa just got one for my 10 year old daughter for Xmas. He shopped around and compared parices / specs. Mini DV (digital tape) is generally recommended on a budget, and that's what Santa bought. He got a JVC off Amazon for only £130 and it works fine, but if you just want point and shoot then DVD recording may be best. Moving the DV taped movie onto DVD so we can show relatives the film is pain in the ar## - I tried 4 software editing packages and had a lot of PC frustration before settling on Windows Movie Maker, which works fine. But you have to capture the film onto the PC, then convert it to a DVD compatible format (about 3 hrs for a one hour film) then get software like Roxio to convert it again and write it onto DVD. I like messing with my PC, but to be honest it's a pain to go through this just to put a title screen on and to tidy up a few bits. A DVD camcorder just goes straight into the TV...

Well I edit - also I have no problems editing, capturing rendering, but have burning.

IMGBURN is excellent for burning image files

I accept a lot of software issues may arise from the spec of your PC - you needs lots of RAM apparently, but I'm just pointing out that if you want to 'shoot and watch' without faffing about, then a DVD camcorder may be best. But I've never tried one either...

Yep, but then you've gotta have the camera attached to the tv, which isn't always desirable. Each to their own...

Recording TV, recording for video cameras and play back of films are three totally different tasks and as far as I am concerned different devises are best.

TV recording hard disk PVR
video camera  - I still think tape is best
pre recorded films - various optical media
