TD overheat
« on: 08 July 2011, 18:54:37 »

Coming home up a steep hill last night, the temp gauge rose fairly quickly to 100 with the overheat light on, it dropped straight back when I eased off the right foot. It has been running warmer in this hot weather, and I think I may have to put the other fan back on. Otherwise it may require another coolant flush and change. I did it last year.

Any comments?

PS Used the Elite today, much more fun. ::) ::) ::) 8-) 8-) 8-) :y

Pull the hoses off the radator. Stick a hose pipe in the top one  and see if you get a good flow threw it  ;)

Had the same problem when I had my diesel.

Ok when cool and driving normally but a bit of hot weather or when I was draging the picky wagon and the temp would go through the roof  :'(

Turned out that the rad was 2/3's blocked  :'(

Might be worth checking water pump.as well think they suffer from.impeller slipping on the shaft.

New pump with metal impeller fitted last year. I think I'll try it with the viscous fan back on first. :y

Shouldn't require another flush Chris ..........

I'd be inclined to re-rit the viscous fan first and see what happens.

That said, it could be a sticking thermostat, or possibly the rad is silted-up.
Got a good spare rad here if you need it. ;)

Thanks Byron, I'll fit the VF back tomorrow. I expect the rad is probably a bit silted, but I am too busy to sort it at present. :y :y :y

Refitted the viscous fan, temp now sits happily at 95 coming up the same hill. I think it needs to be fitted in the summer if you are going to give it some stick. :y

Mine constantly sits at the 96 mark, which I initially felt was a tad too hot.
Viscous is always fitted too.

However, after a session on the Tech2, it was confirmed that the reading was in fact spot on.
Even with the caravan behind, the temp stays the same - so I'm leaving well alone.

I was just following TB's advice, but in future I'll put it on for the summer. :y :y :y

I've had problems with my TD rapidly heating up.  How much does the VF  add to the cooling. And when it gets old (like me) will it fail and run at engine speed continually or will it just not turn at all. Despite having had the leaking water pump replaced and the radiator replaced because the bottom 2/3rds never got hot. The temp gauge  still rises rapidly under load. When I first got the car the temp gauge stayed rock steady whatever.

All I can say is that I have had no problems since I refitted it, so clearly it is effective on warm weather. :y

Temp rising rapidly is fairly normal under high boost conditions, i.e big hill or hard acceleration,
but although it rises rapidly it only goes on mine from 90 to 95,
looks a lot more as its a big lump on the gauge!! but as long as it goes back down fairly rapidly when at the toip of the hill or cruising there is nothing to worry about!!
temp today was 35 and it run all day at 92 rising to 95/96 up the huge hill from the coast!! :y
