possible if he was running a 2.0 redtop......

plus the thing would be lighter than when it came out of the factory due to rust

A Mk I Astra with 1.8 OHC (8v) engine and minor modifications does 125mph, though this involves a 5-speed overdrive gearbox from a Cavalier (as opposed to the standard 'sports' gearbox that came with the Astra GTE where 5th was 1:1 and not overdrive), a long stretch of road, and fair wind. Don't ask me how I know. But the Mk I of the early eighties it was a far lighter car (700Kg) then modern-day Astras.

i can believe this as i had nearly 130mph out of my astra 1.8 eco sport(on a private track of course :))

with an XE or LET lump and the right gearbox 140 would be possible

my brother had a 1.8 gte that did 132 (well thats what the digital speedo said) while i was sat there $hitting my self (on a private road )

it's at that speed you realise that if something goes wrong there is little chance of walking away from the accident

Agreed. But as we all know, no one on this site (with more cylinders than doors  ;)) has ever tried to exploit the car's potential on a quiet motorway Autobahn
