What engine oil to use ? 5W-30 or 10W-40 semi
« on: 09 January 2011, 10:02:22 »

Hi all.
Sounds simple question, but I have different opionins (Vauxhall Service desk and a Motor Factors) as to what oil to use when I do the Oil change this time.

I have V plate 2.5V6 (Paper oil filter- last of Pre face lift models) and VX tell me to use 5W-30 Fully Synthetic, whilst everywhere else suggests 10W-40 Semi Sythetic ? ( I seemed to remember that the latter is what has always been in the car.

Which one is the correct one ? (if there is a correct answer !!!)

Thanks in Advance

Andy.

The real issue is how often to change it. VX 20,000 mile oil change intervals are too long. There are plenty of people on here dealing with the ill effects of leaving the oil in for too long.

The VX 5w-30 is reasonably priced on Trade Card so it is what I use. My last 2.5 was running sweetly at 200,000 miles.

If I was buying from a motor factors I probably wouldn't pay a premium for fully synthetic though  :-/

these oil grades are dependet on the climate :). 5w30 is good in the winter but on a warm climate is not that good
here is what opie oil says about this

I use GM 10/40 semi for both my Omegas (and the Rover, and the Kawasaki, and the lawnmower).

I change my oil about every 4k (used to be 3k) on petrols.  This is much better for the engine than, say, 7k use from a full synth. These are not ultra perfromance engines.

I use GM oil, because:
a) dirt cheap on 'Trade Club'
b) less tendency to mayo up on shorter journeys have some other oils)

agreed.. last year I tried 5w30 for clit.. was not bad in winter but when the spring start engine start a horrible sound..

5w30 is for different engine design/clearences imo..

10/40 all the way.

I do more mileage per week than most, and change at 5k intervals. My engines internals were like new when I tore it down last, and I'm up to 167k now on my 3.0 V6.

Good oil pays premiums, and NEVER let your oil stay in longer than 10k if you are a low-miler no matter what.

Just my opinion, but has served me well.

Depnds if your on trade club IMO. 10w40 is cheapest and does the job well enough.
5w30  if thats the dexos 2 stuff is very expensive retail but fairly reasonable on tc, about £60 for a 20 litre drum, and will last longer than the semi synth stuff.

Pays your money takes your choice etc

However, also take into account the state of the current oil in there. Has it had regular changes ?definitely not if it's a vx only history. So with that in mind I would certainly recommend a couple of quick fire changes with some wynns lifter treatments first off. Then once the oil starts to stay oil coloured for a reasonable length of time, you might consider the fully synth stuff on a more long term basis, depending on how comfortable you are with diy or paying vx retail or a local Mech to do the work...?

From the dealers point of view they will push fully synth because they get more of a mark up.

It's up to you and how you want to manage it at the end of the day. Either will do.

5w40 will covel all year round :). i will be fluid in winter at low temperatures(5w) and will have a higher boiling point in the summer (40), but from what i have seen opel uses 10w40 on my 2.2dti omega and changes it at 30.000km :o. thats too much no matter what engine you have. in autodata is written that in a moderate climate use 10w40 and in a cold climate 5w40. if you live in norway you could use the 30 one but i don't recomend

Thanks again to all.

Just purchased 2 x 5ltrs VX 10W40 Semi (Ebay) - That should do.  Been 24 months since last service at VX.  I do less than 2k per year (did 850 miles last year !!!!) so better look after the 54k miles V6  :D and keep her sweet - Still like new really  :y

4 x 5l is around £32+VAT from dealer if you have TC...

Given the low mileage, I'd change even more regular - short journeys are unkind to oil.
