Alloy Wheel Refurbishment
« on: 31 July 2011, 01:40:57 »

Hi guy's, My F/L Miggy has the 7 spoke alloys fitted and they are looking pretty tardy at this time. Is it wise to get them shotblast and can anyone recommend a London area company or a rough price guide for 5 wheels (either each or as a set)?
Furthermore, would i need to paint/lacquer them afterwards?

Such a missed oppurtunity.
Look forward to the Cadillac ATS & ATS-V. Maybe a re-badged one will replace the Miggy as a RWD runner?

16-17" you will be looking around £50 a tyre from most good alloy retailers!  ;)

i did enquire earlier this year, and local alloy shops said for a full refurb starts from £50 p/w depending on size.

I have just had my 17" late Elite wheels done and for a set of 4 it was £230 and that was with the tyres off before they got the wheels, Now they look like new :) :)

YES..you do need to repaint, then lacquer them or they will soon be covered in a white powder due to oxydisation.
To make it last shotblasting should be followed by a beadblast to seal the surface of the bare alloy before it is painted.
I am soon to do mine as they have a few scuff marks but I will not be taking the tyres tyres off. I intend to grit blast them first myself, then beadblast them and finally prepare and repaint before applying a 2k lacquer. Done it before and it is way, way cheaper if there only a few scuffs. The gritblaster I bought from Aldi (yep, Aldi) about six years ago and it is still going as did when new. The grit and beads I beg from the local shot blasting company for a few beers. ;) ;)

Lepsons in Gillingham charge about £60 a wheel to chemically strip, tidy up and repaint.

Did an excellent job one the couple we've had done.

Lepsons is the place to go .

Over the years I have had several sets done and they make a first class job. They even managed to get a really nasty buckle out 1 of my Irmscher wheels which local tyre places couldn,t balance out and said was beyond hope. Now runs true and straight.

I beleive they will also do a collection service included in their prices so you can just take wheels off..get them collected and have them returned to you all done which would save a trip to Gillingham if you aren,t too local ,and also time away from work.

Recall about £50 a wheel but that may be subject to finish etc...check out their website.http://www.lepsons.com/home.phtml

Most helpful guys, a bit more expensive than i thought but looking at all the options i think it may well have to be Lepsons.
Thanks all.

I had my 18"sportstars fully refurbed once more in May as they were damaged by potholes in the winter conditions (I'm now seriously considering getting a set of winter wheels)I used The Wheel Speciallist @ Garforth nr Leeds a super job cost 250.00, this included removeing the VX locking wheel nuts as I had lost the key,it wasn't in the box which I kept in the car,I consider it may have been used by the MOT garage and not returned I even know which wheel they took off as the usual massive breaker bar extension was required to remove that one wheel.I believe The Wheel Specillist's are a franchise similar to WIM,if you check and you have one they do all the special finishes/colours,and from my experience of my local branch do really care
