Oil Specification.
« on: 06 August 2011, 14:22:01 »

Now we all know regular oil & oil filter changes are good for minimising engine wear and prolonging its life but, if you change your oil regularly and some do well before recommended service intervals, Vx say 10,000 mile (or 12 month) intervals. Is it still worth paying for a 'premium' quality brand and are they in fact any better than a motor factor quality oil produced to the same standards? An argument for longer service intervals could be made based on the fact you use a premium qulaity brand - it seems a waste to buy a premium quality brand at an inflated price then change the oil prematurely. :-/

In Haynes it specifies a Multigrade engine oil viscosity SAE 10W/40 to 15W/50 to API SG/CD or SH/CD. However, is it better to use semi-synthetic and can this be justified. Under what circumstances would there be a need to use fully synthetic? :y

Vauxhall's own premium 10W40 semi synthetic works out at around £11 for 5 litres with a trade card and the 4 for 3 offer.  With genuine filters at under £4 that's around £15 all in per oil change.

So yes, it does make sense to use premium materials.

Change the oil and filter every 5000 miles or 6 months - Vauxhall intervals are sales puff and will shorten the life of your engine.

If you don't have a Trade Card, join Autobahn Stormers for £20 and you get one automatically.  You will save your £20 with your first oil purchase.  And they are a good bunch of people too!

Either is fine. Fully synth has a longer life, but costs more, although it's still cheap on trade club. See the dexos2 spec, it's a good oil.

Personally I use semi synth, changed every 5k... Or so  :-[

My last change was  at Kwik Fit. Six litres of Ow-40 Mobil 1 plus filter £44.95.

I don't have access to a trade card so I don't think that price is too bad.

P.S. I know some here at OOF think that a Ow-40 oil is too thin and pissy to offer any protection........especially in very hot weather.... :y

I believe you have to have an account with each dealer you use.

No, not all dealers are part of the trade club scheme, and even if they are can still be funny about giving away profits or have uneducated staff.

Topic covered in FAQ btw.

Re the specific oils, it's a personal thing, both are in spec. Although it's a perfectly good argument that the thicker oil "might" be more suitable for higher mileage or more warn engines IMO.

A diy oil change is a very good place to start saving money, same with new spark plugs. Tc card cost £20, go buy it.  :y

Let's hope they haven't over tightened the oil filter cap.
