2.5 manual against 3.0 auto - the test !
« on: 03 February 2008, 06:43:57 »

Last night, Markie and I had the chance to test miggy against miggy on an empty dual carraigeway back from Oxford private road.

I was in my facelift 2.5 manual, he was in the 3.0 Auto Elite Estate.

We must have both been thinking the same thoughts at the lights... which miggy is quicker!

Well, to begin with the 3.0 got away a little quicker.. but I gave the 2.5 everything it had, and I definately had the leading edge. Grinning, I changed from 2nd to 3rd gear at just under the red line, and booted it in third.

Thinking "I'll leave it behind me".. the 3.0 suddently came effortlessly sailing past me  >:(

I kept pulling in 3rd gear to just under 90mph, and then gave up, 'cos the Elite was practically on the horizon, and it was obvious which car was quicker.

Bearing in mind that the 3.0 Estate doesn't yet have the multirams properly working!

The 2.5 is not slow, and is running very nicely, so there's obviously a big improvement between the two engines?

have owned ford xr, capri 2.8 inj, sapphire cosworth, 800 vitesse sport etc, get to drive a lot of cars thru work but trust me james for an "old un" my 3.0 auto estate is quite a quick old bus!! the thing i remember years ago when i first drove one was the chassis and how it handled for a big heavy car and how solid it felt. :y

I would agree with that conclusion - about the cars not bout being mad as a hatter..... :-/

Having owned a 2.5 manual and currently with a 2.5 auto and 3.0 auto the 3`s just seem more angry and eager...

Now back to being as mad as a hatter, James,  didnt you once change a vectra radiator in Fort William, in January, at a campsite with a £9.99 argos toolkit ? ???

Well the test on the Private road was very Interesting, i would never , of thought that there would be such a difference between 3 and 2.5.

I didnt actually realise, that there were so many Private roads around your area where you could get up to speeds of 100 plus.
And for that matter Traffic lights too     lmao :y

We need to get my AP22 performance meter out some time, James, and add a 3.2 auto and a Westfield to the 'stats. [smiley=evil.gif]

Hey, it got me another 120 odd miles up to Fife - without having to call the AA!

Trying to get the adjustable down in the wing to take the tension off the aux belt pulley was a nightmare though.!

I would agree with that - the 2.5 manual should get off the line quicker (manual and lower geared), but when the 3.0 starts to sing, its off.

Be aware that our Thames Valley friends are having a little crackdown, and one of the bridges near the Witney turn on your private road is a favourite hiding place...

I've had funny looks removing Omega bumpers on a campsite before as well.  People simply don't understand ;D
