Diesel Splutter
« on: 17 August 2011, 19:27:06 »

Hi all, I've got a small problem with my 2.2DTi Est (52 plate).

It drives great just about the whole time except for when I am cruising at about 45 - 55 mph. If I am light on the accelerator I get a splutter when I lift off.

It doesn't happen if I'm heavy footed or on Cruise control!

Any diesel experts who can tell me where to start looking  :-/

Thanks

dose it do it standing, rev a little till you at the same revs as if you were doing 45-50mph see if it dose it then.. if it dose check the throtle sensor.. may need a clean.

I'm guessing you get this splutter below 2.5K revs (ie. before the turbo cuts in)?

Usually happens when driving on a light throttle and not when you accelerate with a heavy foot. I have these symptoms on mine and initially thought the fuel pump was failing. I replaced the EGR valve (as also had a P0400 code very intermittently) and this improved the splutter issue greatly, however it did not solve it completely. I think my next port of call will be to remove and clean the inlet (the part the EGR bolts to) and also swap the solonoid vacuum valve connected to the EGR vac line on the bracket by the power steering bottle.

Somtimes it helps giving it a Italian tune up as diesels carbon up if not driven hard now and again. :y

Thanks for the responses all.  :)

In answer - no, it doesn't do it when the car is stationary.

Yes, it is when the revs are below 2.5k. I'll try cleaning the bits you suggest and see what happens. The problem isn't bad so I'll do the easy stuff first! :y

And yes it did need a bit of clearing out - went to overtake someone on a quiet Norfolk road, stuck it in 3rd and floored it! I don't know where the other car went as when I looked in the mirror he had disappeared in the cloud of smoke!! ::)
