Another thing to try.. Turn the key and give the gear lever a waggle, and also try starting it in Neutral rather than Park. :y

It seems to me that the starter circuit is OK as the starter (presumably the solenoid) clicks when the key is turned.  :y

There's clearly something there, but the solenoid needs lots of current to pull in fully, so if there's high resistance anywhere it can cause these symptoms.

Agreed. I'd be trying to short it out as you described to see if the starter starts the car.
And as you say, make sure the car is in Park or neutral as it's a pain in the bum trying to hold a car that's in Drive when you're  stood in front of it!!! Been there ........ done  that!  ::) ::)

Never done it on the Omega, but as anyone who's had a 24v Senator/Carlton will tell you, the wiring to their starters was dubious to say the least, and I did it a few times on mine.  :y

Right, put 12v direct to the starter solenoid, nothing. Tried again with key, not even a click :-/. Switched headlights and interior light on, tried again expecting the dash lights et al to dim slightly, nothing, all stayed the same luminance. Totally stumped now. Seriously contemplating sticking it in parts section

Starters hardly ever go wrong... I have changed only one (the other day)

Not a hard job but rather a fiddley pain in the arse job.

1. Undo the engine mount nuts, lift the to enable you to remove the Mount.
2. Remove engine mount bracket.
3. There are two Torx headed bolts E12 that hold the Starter to the block.
4. 13mm socket/spanner & 10mm socket/spanner to undo the two wires...

Mine did, but no clicking, started as a Lazy Starter which I though was the battery, until a new battery nearly caused a melt down of the starter circuit............... ::) ::) ::)
