Picked up my "new" '52 CDX V6 Estate today. before buying I noticed strange tyres "Sunny" brand, never heard of 'em.

Driving home I was aware of a whining noise, high pitched at speed, lower when slow. No obvious vibration.

Do you think this is car (axle, wheel bearings or something)  or tyres ? Mileage verified with HPI at 53k.

could it have been coming through the stereo? This can happen even with the volume down to zero

High pitched at speed, low pitched when slow, actually goes up and down according to speed.

check their dates, if fairly new, you can use for some time..

first time hearing of a tyre brand which is terrible in all aspects, and not a single good review about it..
I guess thats what happens when there aint any actual tests that need to be passed in order to produce a tyre

are the tyre pressures right. could also be the tyres not worn in yet.

May find the noise goes with use.

But regardless, bin the sunnys.

As cem sadi possibly rear differential. Have a quick look underneath the car to see if it is leaking - if it is then you could top up the fluid level to start with (£10ish) or may need to replace the pinnion seal (£20ish)

does the noise get worse when cornering at speed..?

Took it for a run up to the Midlands, 200 mile round trip.

Worse between 30-60mph, almost disappears at 75 and above.

I've almost convinced myself it's the tyres, I hope so as although a new set will cost, its an easy fix.

So, new tyres all round it is then.

Any suggestions what ?

My priorities are:

Safe at speed (I drive abroad quite a lot, occasional thrash on an autobahn)
Reliable
Quiet

Not bothered about fancy performance type features. I'm bracing myself for around £400 for the lot.
