Numberplate illumination
« on: 16 October 2007, 11:26:04 »

Hello,

I have a problem! Car will not pass MOT due to rear numberplate illumination not working. (How stupid!)

Bulb changed (original looked ok) Fuse changed (original looked fine)

Still nothing.  :(

Any suggestions?

Cheers.  :)

They seemed fine. I can't think what else it could be. Unless the wiring internal to the car has gone wrong. I don't even know if it's worth asking where it's routed as i'm guessing it's pretty inaccessible?

Maybe worth getting a long piece of wire and connect from battery direct to holder and see if that works - it'll narrow it down a bit - if it works - might be a temp measure to wire direct from the rear cluster just to get you through the MOT :y

This may be a silly question (im rubbish with electrics!) but the idea of using a long piece of wire to test it - will speaker wire do? That's the only long enough wire i have.  1 each from -ve and +ve terminals on battery? Going to where exactly - where the two wires enter the plastic unit that holds the bulb?

Cheers.  8-)

If you connect wire directly to the battery be very careful not to short it out.

I would instead use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the number plate bulb holder. See if power is getting to it.

Could well be that the contacts in the bulb holder need cleaning up. If there's no power at the bulb holder than we need to start digging around for a fault in the car.
