ALTERNATOR R REG OMEGA
« on: 09 January 2008, 12:42:48 »

Sorry to bother you, my technical ability on cars is a little limited.  I have an R Reg 2L 16V Omega, which is becoming a complete pain in the butt.

I have just replaced the exhaust and now the battery light came on.  After speaking to several people I was informed that it was the alternator, rather than pay betwee 80 - 120 GBP I got a Cavailar 2L alternator which is a 105 AMP will this do.  I understand that the one on my car is a 100 AMP will this cause problems???? :-/

If it physically fits and has compatible electrical connections I can't see the difference in specification causing a problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, the guy at the car recycling place said that there should be no problems, well that sounded good didn't it.  It fitted, all the right connections, that was the good news.  Started the car, no battery light good news, the slight burning smell and the little bit smoke from down the steering column might be a concern and now the rev counter and fuel gauge don't work but the speedo does???? >:(

Beats me!

Oh, Cr@p!

Sounds to me like the electrical connections were different. I believe there's an ignition switched feed to the alternator from the key. Maybe the alternator has shorted this and blown the instrument panel fuse (check the fuses). Failing that I suspect a problem with the battery light circuit.

Okay update - everything seems to work fine, battery light in on at startup, engine light and everything seems to work okay.  Engine Temp gauage works as well as speedo, the only two that don't are the fuel and rev counter????

I have checked the fuses they seem to be okay, but is there a certain fuse that would control both of these???? :o
