I have an original radio setup in my car but the speakers are on the way out, you know that slight crackly noise.... how did that happen?  

I am wondering what is the most cost effective way of solving the problem, note I live in Germany where there are no breakers?

When you crank up the speakers to full volume, the voice coils inside the speakers get hot. The voice coils are the copper windings of cable that form the main part of the speaker`s drive mechanism. As teh coils get very hot (a heating element is nothing more than a coil of wire also) the resin that binds them together starts to melt and deform. As this deforms it then rubs against the inside of the magnet and eventually wears through and short circuits the coil, eventually resulting in the burning out of the speaker, but the tell tale signs are the crackles as it moves in and out. If you do not change them now, the speakers will burn out and could damage the head unit or amplifier that is driving them.

No breakers - why not?

Due to the very stringent motoring laws, aftermarket and pattern spares are also in restricted / short supply - I would imagine secondhand stuff to be almost impossible to obtain. Worth going over the border to a neighbouring country though . . . . . !!

I personally would see it as an opportunity to replace them with some better speakers than the standard ones, with better power handing, for a start. Why go to all the hassle of removing door cards, etc. only to replace like with like?

I know the square root of break all about speakers..... what do you recommend that wont break the bank and give good bass

Whilst they certainly can be improved upon, esp at volume, std fit ain't all that bad, with most of the distortion coming from HU amps...

Components, but you may have problems locating the crossovers, also love amplifiers

I'm guessing the HU has already been upgraded as the standard one wouldn't be capable of frying the speakers. Just guessing though. :-/

Be aware that some decent speakers are less sensitive so need more power to achieve the same volume levels. Not an issue if you have an amp or a head unit with decent output, but might be worth thinking about if you're retaining the factory head unit.

You could either fit a pair of woofers and keep the factory tweeters or change for a decent set of 2 way speakers, although you'll have to find somewhere to hide the crossover as Martin said.

Also, the limiting factor in bass response is the limited volume within the door that the speakers have to work against. Aftermarket speakers will improve on the factory ones in this respect IME but don't expect miracles.

Best way is probably to go to a car audio shop and see what's available  for your budget and what they recommend.

Could do

Crossovers stop the high frequencies going to the woofer, and low frequencies to the tweeter
