Towbar,Fuel Gauge help
« on: 10 June 2008, 14:01:59 »

I know that towbar wiring has been done to death in this section as i have read most it and used advice already given. Anyway i think this is a new one. I am sure i i will be advised otherwise if not.

i couldn't find the elufsive( good spelling?) plug under the back boot cover so i have scotched blocked. Tested the lights on trailer all work no problem there. The only problem is is when i plug the trailer in the fuel gauge stops working and i lose the range on the computer. I have tried swoping the earth around. fuel gauge still won't work when connceted to trailer but petrol lamp flashes. tried earthing straight to chassis light still flashed gauge not working when connected got fed up with it left earh from tow plug off petrol pump still flashing.

is there a magic fix or is it multiplex interface plug time?????

Thanks for your time

Hopefully, one of the towers will be along soon. Never really looked into towbar wiring to know why that happens.

I can only assume your towbar wiring has been connected to the fuel gauge sensor wire by mistake, or that the fuel gauge sensor and towbar wiring are sharing a chassis negative connection which isn't 100% secure.

As Kevin says, sounds like the "switched live" might be taken from the fuel guage sender which is NOT a good idea.

This usually taken to a sensing relay in the boot and once the relay is "active" (ie ignition is on or on the more sophistacted relays, voltage is above 14v - alternator running) then power is sent to both the fridge circuit (12S pin 6 Red) and the lights/charging circuits (12S pin 4 green)

If you have wired to pre-1998 standard then it is the "old" battery feed (12S pin 2 blue)

Hope that helps .. this might explain it better ...

Thanks very much I was tapped onto a fuel sender wire. for info it was Black/blue which i had connect my Blue(fogs) onto. As my trailer isn't posh enough to have these i never picked it up. i have just snipped it off  i'll find right wire someother time.

took the wiring info off the thread below great help but there must be slight changes with the loom.
