I found this amplifier in my shed.

2 x 30W

Is it actually any good?

I was given it 16 years ago and I forgot I had it.

To be fair most head units kick out that kind of power on four channels, though could be some use I guess

I had the component Pioneer stuff years ago, I seem to remember a GM120 powering a pair of subs and a GM 4 powering a pair of tweeters cant remember the head unit but I know it was top of the range at the time.

I still reckon it sounded better then (installed in a Cavalier 2000 Sports Hatch) than most of the stuff I hear rumbling round town does at night.  All sounds far too distorted these days.  Maybe it's just me, getting old.

I think the main thing you will have to watch out for Martin is the wiring compat ability, In the early days they all decided to fit thier own unique multi plugs.

I don't even know if it works and my HU is 30W a channel anyway

The GM-41A was a brilliant amp in its day - outclassed by virtually every head unit on the market nowadays, so not worth using unless you have the rest of the Pioneer system to go with it.

That said, there is still a dedicated following for the amp, and as long as you have the power leads for it (as now a ridiculous price to buy new) its worth sticking up on ebay as someone will have it off you.

That said, there is still a dedicated following for the amp, and as long as you have the power leads for it (as now a ridiculous price to buy new) its worth sticking up on ebay as someone will have it off you.

It has an 8 pin DIN lead and a 7 wire 8 connector lead with quite a few terminals on it.

Never managed to get a line out to my old Blaupunkt radio cassette in the Sunbeam, else it would have been used there.

I'm watching an Ebay one to see what it gets, but I will probably CBS this one.

So best to stick with my Sony HUs own amp for the rear speakers then?

There are RCA to Pioneer DIN convertors readily available for around a fiver, and A speaker level to RCA adaptor could then be used to give the Blaupunkt a Line out.

Not a great deal of work, and some would argue as to whether it is worth it or not. Power wise, you are not going to gain a lot, but you will virtually always get a better quality output from an external amplifier than you will from the one shoehorned into the stereo.

Would I bother doing it?  close call, but probably yes.

Now on Ebay
