Hands-free kit question
« on: 19 June 2008, 10:30:42 »

Been thinking about having a basic hands free kit fitted...today whilst waiting at a junction i noticed a small thin bit of plastic attached to inside windscreen just above dash board, thought it odd so when arrived hone had a look and at the same time noticed a speaker in passenger foot well....then it dawned on me the car must have had some sort of kit previously installed, theres no phone holder (just the screw holes left behind  ::)).

Question is how do i find out what kit it is....there no markings on the speaker, would there be anyway too tell what make it is by the way its wired up or the fact it uses an Ariel inside windscreen. :-/

Probably clutching at straws but guessed its worth a try.

Oh and i dont have a small Ariel on roof just in case that makes a difference.

Pop the panel off above the passenger footwell and have a look for the control box.

why do lazy fitters fit the speaker.  Better to direct sound through stereo.

If car prewired, just a case of plugging new kit through adapter to car loom, and fitting a mic sometimes.  Bluetooth CK-7W can be picked up for £30 on ebay if patient...

Yeah was thinking that this morning but wasn't too keen as just finished night shift, will take a look tonight,i assume id be looking for a loom that's been taped up as per other thread.??

I dont have a small stubby Ariel on roof as per my other cars have had so guessed this one wouldn't be prewired as it would need a Ariel for signal.

If i have no other option than bluetooth thats the way i will go...but a wired system would be much more beneficial.

On second inspection (whilst driving to work) ive noticed a mic dangling from the rear view mirror, looks like its wires are coming from interior light. :-?

pre-wired mic is, I believe, usually in the interior light -- so the one you have might have been moved for better pick up. The aerial isn't necessarily in the stubby -- it's inside the car usually -- again, I could be wrong -- but that's my take  :-/

I"ll try and bluethooth some pics from phone to laptop and upload them later....the mic is rather large so guess its part of what ever previous car abuser (owner) has had fitted.

Just been looking up the bluethooth kit The boy mentioned and must say it does look good,be interested if anyone has had dealing with this kit.

I use the CK-7W in both my Omegas (and in her Rover), with sound redirected through stereo via autoleads adapter.

Works well, although the one in the tractor is faulty (I have a spare sat on my stairs, just need to fit), giving the other party an awful echo.

To use voice dialling, your phone has to support voice dialling over bluetooth - most Nokias do, 2/3yr old Motorola (Razer) and SE seem to be a bit flakey, and most pre WM5 Windows phones don't.  HP Windows phones seem problematic with either voicedialling, or TomTom using the bluetooth permenently.

With my Nokias, and my current Windows phone, it works flawlessly - I jump in car, start car, and any incoming/outgoing call routed via stereo.  Both mine and Mrs TBs phones are set up for all 3 cars, so they both 'just work'.  If we both get in car, its luck of the draw which one becomes handsfree - the CK-7W can only deal with 1 phone at a time (can have up to 8 paired), though if there is more than one of us in car, I prefer her to take call anyway.

Well after reading that im actually inclined too go with the CK-7W...will still have a look at the stuff preinstalled, however being able to have a nokia or a regular bluethooth phone does seem a better option.
And its a good excuse to upgrade from my Samsung D600...to maybe a Nokia N80 ?

I see the Ebay prices are very reasonable £35 delivered best ive found so far.

Is the installation fiddly/involved as per your set up ?

Two plugs in the top picture are speaker and microphone connectors, 2nd picture will be for control box, not sure what type but definitely not any recent Nokia or Motorola kit.

if you have the prewiring plug, its easy. You may be able to use mic already fitted, in which case just plug all in.  If not prewired, a little more tricky

Yes.  If that exists, just get an Autolead for prewired Vauxhalls (£20), use your existing mic, and its plug it all in and enjoy
