Hi,

I've used Trafficmaster for years, 1st in my Calibra with a standalone unit called Freeway, and then on my last Megga and now this one.  I reckon it's really worth having - saved me hours of traffic holdups!  But then I do about 20k miles a year.

Have PM'd Dave too  :)

What's the cover like down this part of the world?  I have always assumed outside the M25 car park 'twas useless
It covers motorways and main (trunk) roads like A31, A3 etc.

Hi,

Due to the high demand for this service, we have decided to restrict this to both established and/or very active members on the OOF forum. So if you are a newbie, or do not have many posts yet, then our apologies, you may not get a quick response, if at all.

Sorry if this sounds a little harsh, but we do love these technical forums, they are a great resource of knowledge and help, but sadly there are too many out there who like to log on only a few times, gleam all the info they can, and then never return or give anything back. Our secrets and TM services are therefore only going to be given to those who also contribute to the forum - after all, thats only fair don`t you think?

No Dave, it's not at all fair. If you wanted to restrict this information why invite people to PM you? Perhaps you didn't anticipate the demand.

I've only recently joined and I am a novice at repairing my own vehicle so there is very limited opportunity for me to make a contribution. As a consequence it will be some time before my postings will add up to much. At the moment I don't have enough knowledge or experience to be able to "give anything back".

Despite this, several members have already been very generous in sharing their knowledge, experience and even their personal time.

As a direct result of meeting TB and Dunnie in person I will be attending the WIM meeting on 27th (if it goes ahead). I am looking forward to making some new friends there.

I'm only glad I encountered them first because if I had come across your attitude I would have been long gone. The beauty of this forum is that those with the knowledge share it with everyone, not just a select clique of favourites.

I think it is quite wrong to announce that you have a "secret" available on an open forum and then turn round and say that some people aren't worthy to share it.

If this is in fact a two-tier forum I would like to know how many posts it will take before one is accepted as part of the community that has full access. Perhaps the administrators should prepare a password protected senior area for those blessed ones worthy to receive DaveDND's secrets.

Interesting points raised by Dave DND and Alex W.

Both I think are valid, yet contradictory.

Dave DND makes valid points about people who want something for nothing.  Whilst as a forum, we are happy for people to come and browse, glean any information we post, and leave, some people (and not just Dave DND) would rather spend their limited resources helping those that 'put something back'

Alex W makes a valid point about some members - perhaps those that need OOF the most  :-/ - aren't necessarily able to 'give much back', certainly technically.

As said, both views I think are equally valid from where I'm standing, and both should be equally respected.

Alex, this is not a secret, but as far as i know, a hardware mod performed, not just a case of knowledge.

Also a tricky mod on some as well depending on your car.

If it was something you could easily do yourself, the info would be out there.

Also, neither of our cars have traffic master, so no mods on any of these cars, but the info is out there if you can find it.

Like you I joined up with no knowledge at all, but feel I have progressed well and will now tackle a fair few jobs, never ever got my hands dirty before.

Although I see the validity of both points raised, I would take issue with Alex feeling he is unable to contribute much due to his technical inexpertise ...... I am a mechanical moron --- no not an idiot robot, but my mechanical ineptidude knows no bounds, yet I try ( try!) to contribute in just being part of the community, as I learn I can help others (hopefully), but in the meantime feel I have something (as yet undefined) to contribute.

So, I would say to Alex ...."Jump in, join in and enjoy. Yes, it's a car forum -- but it's not ALL about cars"

Hi Jimbob,

It was declared as "a little secret". But that is beside the point. I've had my current Elite for three years without TM and I'm not that bothered about it. My previous Omega had a full subscription but I found the messages were too late to be of much use as I'd already passed the motorway junction I was being warned to leave by (probably driving too fast, V6 Omegas are great motorway cars).

But if you don't want to share your "secrets" don't invite all sundry to pm for them. Its very insulting to be invited to request information and then be told that you're not good enough to be included in the clique.

Before my posting here no-one knew I had even sent a pm but many people HAD annouced in this thread that they were sending one and DaveDND has just publicly announced his personal disrespect for several of those members. He has compounded the insult by saying that he's not even going to bother with a personal reply, although it was he that invited everyone to waste their time with pm's in the first place. Now we have some members posting thanks and others being made to feel worthless.

If new members are going to be treated like that they won't stay around for long. I'm glad to say that everyone else I have encountered on the forum has been fantastically welcoming.

What we seem to have here is a guy running a business that appears to specialise in cracking proprietory coding information for commercial gain, that obviously involves a serious investment of time and resources. It must go against the grain for a businessman to be giving away knowledge of commercial value to him in a free forum when there is obviously great demand. I can't think what possessed him to offer it in the first place.

I think I see both sides of this one, and feel both are partly correct. Dave DND offers to help 'fellow members' and says he feels only this applies only to 'bona fide' members, who give as well as take. But Alex feels that he is being 'victimised' as he is a 'newbie' and feels unable to 'give' as Dave DND wants.
I think, personally, that Dave means, 'people who just want help for free' not people who regularly visit the site, contribute (not just knowledge!) but also get involved in the discussions, join in the banter, etc. You'd be suprised how sometimes, you can help people with other areas, as in computers, general knowledge. Help comes in many different forms.
Dave probably just doesn't want people 'freeloading', ie: logging in, asking for help, then not coming back until they have another problem.
This is the way I read this, tho' please correct me if I am wrong!! :-/
