SWMBO'S Ibiza has just refused to start tonight, checked everything, but cant find jack s**t identifting any issues. I'm used to cars with very little electronics, even my meega scares me! Got the car recovered to the garage where it was serviced 2 weeks ago. Will find out tomorrow how much I am going to get ripped off.

Car has two owners, full dealer service history, 61k, and nothing but wires and microchips running the piece of c**p!

Sorry, but this car, cost more to buy, costs more to run (parts wise), and has generally been more of a tempremental, moody, stubborn, expensive and time consuming thing than the breadknife!

Err, that should have read, (than my meega, including fuel)!

Help me please!

We have 3 months warranty left which seems to cover sweet fanny adams. That's not a good thing BTW

Without more details, all I can suggest is the following;

Make sure that the clutch pedal is ALL the way down, there is usually a switch at the bottom to let you start it.

Is the little key symbol going out on the dash?  Is the engine symbol coming on when you turn the ignition on?

Without more details, all I can suggest is the following;

Make sure that the clutch pedal is ALL the way down, there is usually a switch at the bottom to let you start it.

Is the little key symbol going out on the dash?  Is the engine symbol coming on when you turn the ignition on?

When I start a car, I always press the clutch and brake.
When turning this thing over, no lights on dash then after a couple of seconds the word 'oil' appears on the display and the oil light comes on.

When was it serviced last including oil change...and any leaks, was it clattery - when running -  suggesting oil starvation?

That's what i think.

serviced at main stealer 2 weeks ago, engine totally dry, no nasty clattery noises.

I really am stumped

i preseme its petrol, are the camshafts getting well lubricated with oil....does the dipstick read a decent level?

Check the numpties have tightened the airfilter box down properly if its a smaller petrol unit as the bolts for this go through the throttle body to...

Oil is fine and the airbox just sits on top of the throttle body, no screws or bolts on the 1.2 12v 3cyl.

I am possibly thinking fuel pump? The fuse is fine but I could not hear it switching on with the ignition.

Thing is, I never have heard it.

these 3cyl ones suffer from timing chain probs, take the blanking plugs off the back of the head and turn the engine over by hand to make sure the slots in the end of the cams line up at tdc
easy way of finding tdc is take out no.1 plug and put a long screwdriver onto the piston, turn the engine and when it reaches the top its at tdc

OK. We have the diagnosis from the garage.

Timing chain jumped a tooth. Needs new timing chain kit,  possibel valve and/or cylinder head damage.

Minimum £400 worth of damage.

It isnt to me.....

There is this myth that chains are the holy grail of cam drive setup.

Reality is that they have been causing probelms since they were used on pretty much most engines I can remember and at random(ish) mileages!

At the end of the day its a bit of metal running on a tensioner in an oil bath, it will stretch and the tensioner setup will wear and they will need changing at some point.

These daft 2 year 20K mile oil change intervals dont help them either!
