Motorola HF850 Fitted!
« on: 23 August 2009, 19:40:05 »

Hi all,
I managed to get my Motorola HF850 handsfree unit fitted yesterday without too much trouble into my facelift with prewiring. I'm mentioned in other posts that my car had a badly fitted Nokia car kit - imagine my surprise when I removed the footwell cover under the glovebox, and down popped the Nokia HFU-2, only to find that the person who installed it had actually gone to the trouble of buying the autoleads harness for the VFA connector, but was only actually using the mute & sense leads! They had wired the 12v feed to the cigar lighter socket for some reason, and just not bothered connecting the speakers or to the GM microphone!

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I plugged the autoleads harness mic & speaker jacks into the box, and no surprise, they worked perfectly with a 6310 mobile. Still, it made my life installing the HF850 much easier.
The Motorola power connector is different to the Nokia one, so I connected it as follows:

+12v - RED - to RED on harness, VDA pin 11
GND - BLACK - to BLACK on harness, VDA pin 1
IGN - GREEN - to BLUE on harness, VDA pin 10
MUTE - ORANGE, to YELLOW on harness, VDA pin 4

I chopped the jack connectors for mic and speaker off the autoleads harness, and removed the connector from the Motorola speaker. I connected them together as follows:

SPEAKER+ - BLACK - to BLACK on harness, VDA pin 16
SPEAKER- - BLK/WHT to BLK/WHT on harness, VDA pin 7

I then powered up the unit, and tested it with the GM mic insert - no joy, so I decided to run in the Motorola mic.
(Note the connections for the GM mic are 9&14 on the VDA - I have heard that some also have a third wire connected to pin 18)

I removed the GM mic capsule from the courtesy light, and taped up the wire behind - the Motorola mic is a nice snug fit into the gap, and works perfectly:

... ran the wire down the pillar and below the glovebox. I've located the controller in front of the gearbox selector....

... then tidied up the wiring loom

...before attaching the control box (very light) to the back of the footwell panel with velcro.

They are knocking these bluetooth units for £19.99 on eBay now (were £76 not so long ago), and whilst they are not as fully featured as some of the Parrot ones etc, they are pretty good value for money.
By the way, this is what the GM mic insert looks like....

Hope you find this helpful!  :y - sorry if the pics are a little fuzzy - mobile 'phone job.

Good job done there, and nice to see some pictures and descriptions - that will certainly help and inspire others trying to do the same

Well done. My Parrot arrived in the post today. 12 days for first class registered. Grrrr.

All connected ok (except that the mute line is black and the same sized conductor as the switched live - also black). I do however have one outstanding problem.

The audio input to the radio is giving me problems. The level of audio from the CCR800/Bose is very low indeed - so I'll have to do some continuity checks and see what's. I'm getting a DC resistance via the twisted pair into the transformer of about 8 ohms - which seems reasonable enough. If the problem is from the secondary of the transformer to the back of the radio that will be a pig to resolve due to space etc.

If however I connect a (spare) speaker straight to the Parrot audio output then all works fine.

I can't tell from your pictures/description if you are using the audio input or not - any comments?

Many thanks .......... Rob

is the parrot supposed to intercept the speaker feeds, or just sen it straight to radio?  If the former, its probably unsuitable for your needs due to bose stuff....

I'll be taking a speaker level output from the Parrot and sending it to the input of the CCR800. When the mute pin is earthed it switches the input (on pins 20 & 23 of the radio) which comes via the isolating transformer and routes it through the stereo/Bose to the speakers.

The procedure is outlined on pages 30/31 of the '98 MY audio manual.

I've done it before on a '97 MV6 & it works, but suspect some wiring funnies from the isolating transformer to the radio as I had to retrofit the Bose wiring and used an old Trafficmaster cable as a donor.

Hi there,

Yes, I'm using the speaker input into my CDR2005 via the transformer. It was not particularly high on the first go, so I've set the input volume to +3 for the phone on the CDR2005 and it is okay now. I'm sure that I've read somewhere on the Internet that the input does not work the same way with the Bose units & there are differences for Traffic Master (which I don't have fitted). I seem to recall that there was something else required, not just the transformer.
I'll let you know if I come across the article again. Glad you got the rest working! :)

I've come to the same conclusion and tomorrow will be hunting pin 23 through. The muting function isn't a problem as the signal is simply grounded - & I've removed the Trafficmaster anyway!

I have a hunch as they say!
