towbar wiring... again...
« on: 16 September 2009, 18:03:57 »

I've just been given a towbar for my estate, it has twin electrics, but no plugs on the vehicle end, anybody know where i can get plugs to fit the omega and in fact does the omega harness support twin towbar sockets?

How does a bar 'with twin electrics' not have the sockets? The sockets & associated wiring ARE the twin electrics. You'll find a socket somewhere at the back of the car (never looked at an estate so don't know) where you'll find the connections for the black 12n socket. The grey 12S needs a permanent live for fridge - via a relay - and a 12 volt supply for the caravan (depending on age of the 'van it's either a permanent supply to temp supply your 'van with 12 volts or for the leisure battery charging)
The plugs & sockets can be bought at various places eg http://www.leisureshopdirect.com/caravan/electric/towing_plugs_and_sockets.aspx but there are loads!

I don't think you'll find those unless someone was rich enough to order a factory fit towbar, and even then you'll only get the 12N. Just use the socket wiring to get your connections from, but be aware that the brakes (black/yellow) at the socket won't suppply the brake light direct. It's wired from a trailer brake check control 'relay' which fits behind the glove box on face lift cars & above the driver's feet on PRE face lift cars, the 'relay' is/was about £16 If you seach hard enough on the forum, you'll find the part number - i posted it - but god knows where.  ::)  :y   :y

IIRC the plugs for the tow bar sockets are on the left side in the spare wheel well.

there is i was looking at it a while ago, but I seem to remember that the Miggy estate had a dedicated connector behind/underneath the tailgate slam panel trim (if that's the correct term for it) and wanted to know where i could get the towbar side of that connector from.

sorry if i'm not making myself clear enough  :-[

Hmmm seems it might be easier to just wire it in normally, as per the how-to, just thought it might be easier to just plug it in to the existing socket as it were.

so do i have to remove the slam panel trim? or can i get to it by just taking out the spare wheel?

Neither ;D just open the lid and they are tucked up the left hand rear corner.

I've got to take the towbar off the gold 2.2 so I can do a colour to colour chart for the maintanence section :y
