Immobiliser / ECU / Loom Problems....
« on: 16 November 2009, 00:08:26 »

I’ve stripped out the full loom from the front of the Omega for a kit car project.

I then grabbed the wire cutters and started to chop wires (at quite an alarming rate I must add!   :o:-X) for everything that I assumed wasn’t necessary.

Anyway, about an hour and a bit later I had a BIG pile of scrap, and a more reasonably sized loom.

I thought I had chopped everything from the loom that wasn't needed, however when I came to do a bench test on it, getting "My Naff Code Reader" to talk to ecu etc I discovered a problem....

I’ve chopped a wire which comes from the immobiliser aerial thing (brown/red).

Other than that, everything seems fine. "My Naff Code Reader" talks to engine ECU, and reports all sensors are working fine.

"My Naff Code Reader" also talks to Immobiliser and says that the correct key is present - however there is a fault code - didn’t not it down, but IIRC it said '19? voltage low' or something? (will try to rescan codes tomorrow) – It wasn’t a flat battery either that was 12.6v :y

Then engine light on the dash isn't flashing, so it recognises the key however it wont allow me to crank the engine over. Switch ignition on without the key near the immobiliser aerial, and the engine light flashes (as it should).

So I’m VERY nearly there.

I suspect that the immobiliser thinks that either the cars locked or alarmed?

And hence, I guess something needs to be applied to the brown/red wire. However what does it need to be? +5v? +12v? Ground? Or (hope its not) data?

Any ideas? :-? :-?

Hmm wiring isnt my favourite subject!! however just a thought would it be thinking the gearbox isnt in neutral or park?in other words looking for the isolater switch on gearbox to allow starter  to engage?

Not sure about wiring colours, but I can confirm that communication between the transponder aerial ring around the steering column and ECU is a data signal - but from your description, sounds as if it is working ok.

Easy tested by cutting it again and looking for the flashing light as confirmation?

As far as I know, the immobiliser is only activated by the key (at least two circuits) and I do not think that the alarm itself adds anything else

Immobiliser doesn't disable the starter either, so my guess would also be the starter signal to the solenoid which would ordinarily be looped through the gearbox selector switch IIRC.

Does it start if you apply 12v to the starter solenoid terminal using a jump lead?

Have a look at the manual gearbox conversion post on here....it gives details of how to loop this little feature out.

SHE RUNS!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Bit of a bodge job - full fuel tank just slapped across the kit car chassis, fuel pump linked straight to battery terminals! (First time she sprung a leak and pissed fuel everywhere  :-[ :-X) but after that minor hiccup, we decided to turn the key....

BRRRUUUUMMM!!!!

My god, the V6's are blooming loud with no exhausts / cats on!

They also rock about a bit when there just sat on a plank of wood when you grap the throttle!!!  :o :o :o :o ;D ;D :D

Well mate you deffo was right!  :y

The second I read your post I knew it HAD to be that! I cant believe I forgot about it actually, as I remember telling Jim (hes the chap who im building kit car with) that we needed to bridge the wire when we too the engine out a couple of months back!  ;D ;D ;D

So BIG thanks for reminding me! :y

I read 'Hmm wiring isnt my favourite subject!! however just a thought would it be thinking the gearbox isnt in neutral' then CLICK... Thats it!

What an idiot! Still cant believe I forgot about it. Like I said above, I told my mate we needed to bridge it when we pulled the lump out!  ;D

Still got a grin on my face from getting the engine running! Especially when you think that I’ve chopped shedloads of wires out of the loom (with no instructions or diagrams or anything to hand). No exhausts fitted. She wasn't bolted down at all! Just the sump sat on a plank of wood – so was rocking all over when you first started it / revved it! And the fuel pump was wired to the battery (loose connections so I could quickly pull them off if needed!) with the worst fuel pipe connections in the world that could have leaked at any moment!

All adds to the fun I guess... Dread to think what would happed if she did leak - esp when she back fired a few flames out of the exhaust manifolds  ;D ;D :-X
