Rear Washer Question?
« on: 11 January 2010, 19:46:42 »

So, my rear washer's never worked since I've had the car. I've lived with it for some time but recently of course things have been very grubby so it's galvanised me into doing a bit of research.

I see from the Haynes manual, that there is only one washer pump for the front and the rear screens, so how does one pump service both screens? Is there an electric valve somewhere to direct the water to front and rear? Do the wiper stalks switches go US? I can't hear if the pump runs when trying to wash the rear screen but then I can't hear it when washing the front screen! Any advice? Thanks.

think its related to direction of motor - seem to recall still only 2 wires.

I'd pop off tube at pump, and blow into it to see iff blocked...

Ooh, I hadn't spotted that one! I'll go and have another look at the wiring diagram. You are right it's only two wires-I had to replace the pump soon after I got the car and I remember the connector.

Did you replace it with the correct pump then? As said, the rear screen washer is done by reversing the pump so you need the two outlets from the washer bottle pump.

It's a while ago, but yes I presume it was as I got it from a Vauxhall dealer and they asked for the chassis number! Mind you, that doesn't mean much ;) I can't remember if it had more than one pipe or not but I don't remember having a spare pipe. If only this snow would break off back to whereve it came form I might be able to get a look :y

I came a cropper with a washer pump from a fiesta in my Beach Buggy - two outlet pipes and two wires, but when I put voltage across it, one of the pipes spouted water, so I fitted it.

Not untill I accidentally used the stalk controls for the rear wiper, did it reverse the voltage to the pump and fill the footwells up with water from the unconnected pipe instead.

Doh !

Just wondering how easy it is to get to the washer pump, as I appear to have a blockage in mine...

I have done the "blow" back and the "suck" through to try to clear it and it worked better for a few squirts, but, then blocked again.  This is the front washer, I have blown through the jets, so I know that they are clear and it is down stream of the side bonnet connection.

So really I guess I need to darin the washer bottle and clear them through...

Remove your grille & the tank with the pump(s) is right there behind the bumper. The pump is just a push fit into the grommet - with incorporates a strainer - so to remove it, you pull it away from the pump & lift it out. The strainer tends to get gunged up, so give that a clean before you put it back.  :y

Thanks Andy, you have confirmed my suspicions of the existence of the strainer, so I shall drain and clean the system...

Once you have the pump out, just shove a hose pipe into the hole & flush it out that way!  :y  :y

Or as the strainer is part of the rubber seal that holds the washer pump, simply pull it out, wash under a cold tap, and put it back.

I was talking about flushing the tank/sytem out like Psychoca was talking about! If you read further up the posts, instead of selective reading, you'll notice that I've already said about cleaning the strainer of gunge!  :-X

Well, all done, nice and easy...  at least it would have been if I hadn't pushed the strainer through when I replaced the pump....
