Daytime Running Lights
« on: 21 February 2010, 13:40:46 »

I fancied fitting a set of the above ala Audi. Nothing too garish or "chavish" so opted for a discreet 5 x led slim fitting set to be fitted within the lower grille area.
The enclosed instructions offers two fitting options - 1) to be wired inst the side light circuit or 2) fitted via a switch mounted on the dashboard.
If I were to go for a third option and wire them so that they came on with the ignition and stayed on until I switched the engine off, where would be the best place to take the live feed from?
Thanks, in advance. :y

If you were to use a feed from the stereo, then make sure that it is via an additional fused relay.

The switched method is certainly preferable, for no other reason than you can switch them off when you are fed up with all of your mates calling you a chav. (Ha! spellcheck changed that one!!)
 :-X

Sorry, I really don`t like them. LED lighting yes, but those Audi things just look like a stuck on afterthought and so badly done by a respectable manufacturer at that.

My day running lamps on the truck were wired via a fused relay from the output on the alternator. As soon as the engine was running it switched the lights on.

Like the car's wiring for a caravan's split charge relay  :y

Thanks for the advice guys.
I would have used a fused relay whatever option used but I like the sound of running it from the alternator.
I didn't really fancy the dashboard switch option for no reason other than damaging it. :D

Did anyone ever work out how this worked? There was some talk of replacing one of the headlight relays to make the lights come on with the engine.

Completely agree with that - look like fairy lights from a Xmas tree..........
I do think daylights - or whatever they get called - are a good idea for safety reasons.
You're more likely to be seen with lights on, ask a biker! :y
Just wish Audi did a better job though!

But with everyone fitting DRLs, a biker with his lights on will just blend in with the rest  :(

Good point well made Andy.
I suppose it's a tough call, but probably still safer to be seen than not.
I've seen an idiot pull out of a junction even if a big screaming fire engine with lights blazing was bearing down on them.............you simply can't think for everyone!
