Kenwood DNX5220 Double DIN fitting issues; Help!
« on: 18 April 2010, 10:37:14 »

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before, I have had a look using the search feature but cannot seem to find the answer!

I have an ex-plod 2001 MV6 which came with a CDR2003 installed (cassette, how retro!) but also have an aftermarket Kenwood DNX5220 Double DIN which I have just taken out of my other car.  I brought the fascia adapter and the various wiring looms to convert ISO and also enable the steering wheel controls.  Then yesterday morning, set out to swap the units over.

The problem – it doesn’t fit.

The cage for the Kenwood DNX5220 is I believe a standard Double DIN size, but it will not fit into the aperture in the dash, I first removed the metal cage for the standard stereo which leaves me with the plastic cage, the Kenwood cage is about 4 or 5 mm to tall to fit into this.  So does this mean that this plastic cage (which also forms part of the overall structure of the dash i.e. all the buttons fix to it too) needs to be attacked with a Dremel? Also, the Kenwood unit with the Kenwood Bezel fitted is not the right size either for the facia adaptor, it’s slightly too tall (again) and not quite wide enough so again, looks as though it needs some form of customising.

The problem is that I thought the Kenwood being a standard Double DIN size and the facia adaptor (allegedly for fitting a standard Double DIN aftermarket unit) would ‘just work’, but it doesn’t.

Has anyone else come across this problem?  How do you resolve it?  Any help and importantly pictures of work in progress or the finished result would be greatly received before I throw the Kenwood cage at the wall!

Thanks

Hi,

Do you need the cage for your stereo? Looking at my double DIN clarion unit I have just bought it looks like a snug fit as it is, I have only bought a facia as I hope to use the cage already fitted with a bit of modification

Cheers,
Iain

Have you offered the Clarion up to the facia adaptor - does it fit properly?  The Kenwood is slightly different in size; frustrating!

Hi,

There seems to be a bit of a gap around my facia/unit, guess it might sit better when fitted though :-/

Cheers,
Iain

Interesting, I seem to have the opposite problem that the Kenwood bezel will not fit into the facia adapter as the aperture is too small...

Could you post some photos whose you have it fitted so I could have a look, it'd be a great help.  Thanks.

something is wrong with the cage, facelift Omega is standard double DIN, i fitted a Clarion Double DIN unit few years ago, but it was rubbish, so went for single din as much more choice.

I also have a double din unit and fitted a fascia.
Cage fitted ok, and still some space left on both sides (left and right)
The only problem I've found is the depth of the stereo (but mine is a shitty chinese product which works like a charm I must admit but is stupid to use).
It could be an issue and maybe that metal fitting in the dash will need cutting a little.
