tweeters
« on: 06 February 2011, 23:49:21 »

hi guy's , does anyone know who makes aftermarket speakers that fit into the original locations with no mods ? my drivers side tweeter has been playing up for a while and i'm thinking of just upgrading the pair as i've treated myself to an alpine x305 head unit :D and i'm really noticing the difference in sound more than ever now . i know i can compensate using alpines expensive little box of tricks but i'd rather just get new tweets  :).

If it's Bose the rest of the speaker system will be 2 ohm so the tweeters will have to match this. Most aftermarket tweeters will be suited to a 4 ohm system so you will have less output from them in a Bose setup. In addition, they'll probably need a crossover whereas the original tweeters had a (crude) crossover (ok, just a series capacitor!) built-in.

As you have an aftermarket head unit you would be wise to remove all the Bose stuff and replace it with decent aftermarket components, to be honest, as the Bose amp can't be driven from the speaker outputs of an aftermarket head unit.

When I fitted my Rainbow tweeters I just removed the outer ring from the original tweeters and glued it onto the new ones so they slot in exactly where the old ones came out.

thanks kevin  :y i'd love to replace the whole system but thats got to go on the back burner at the moment as i'm looking into another omega related enterprise ( think i might be getting the car bug lol ) ,

wasn't aware of the 2ohm issue either so thats going to be a big help , i always thought car speakers etc ran on 4 , so 2ohm tweets with a little OE added to it ,followed in a year or so by a complete replacement . is it a difficult job to junk the BOSE stuff ? :-?

The tweeters are 4 ohm on Bose, same as standard its the rest of the Bose speakers are 2 ohms.

If you have the bose setup I'm surprised it's working happily from the speaker outputs of a head unit (if that's indeed the setup you have). Usually that would result in the inputs of the Bose amp being overdriven.

i just removed the old head unit and slapped the new one in to be honest , everything works fine , i'm getting active bass etc and the speakers won't go as loud as i'd like so i'm presuming its running through the bose system , its definately got the grills etc with bose on and there is some gubbins up under the parcel shelf which i presumed to be the amp etc . you've got me wondering now  :-?

The Bose amp will probably give out about due to being overdriven by the high power Alpine approx 10 seconds before the alpine then sees a short circuit load and goes bang !!

Alpine and BOSE should not be mixed ! You will need to remove / replace everything BOSE in the car, including amp, speakers and wiring in order to use aftermarket items - if not, then it will get very expensive, very quickly

Quite likely, we have done a lot of work for Halfords over the years including a lot of warranty repairs as well on the ICE side of things.

Seem to remember a nasty incident in a pub car park with the "self start" - didn`t someone get killed?
