car stereo help

hi, could someone please help? i tried to change my car stereo from the original tape cassette to a goodmans cd/mp3 player with no luck.  when i wire it to the loom that is already there it works fine but as soon as i try to slide it into the space that i took the old one out of it it blow the number 12 fuse and goes dead (the stereo not the car).  not very technically minded, so please keep it as simple as possible, lol. my car is a 1995 omega 2.5 td. thanks.  :-*

Guessing the wiring is shorting on something - is the wiring damaged?

How are you wiring it into the loom ? if your using the old cut and tape method it sounds like youve got a bare wire somewere. get some of that shrink stuff and do each one again taking care to make sure the lives are totally insulated. hth

definatley no wire are bare coming off the new stereo but will have a good look tomorrow at the wires that are coming from the car. will post tomorrow to let you know. thanks for your help.  :-*

Just had another thought check your speaker wires as well if you aftrermarket unit has a built in amp then touching speaker wires will have the same effect

Modern stereos should just be a case of connecting the plugs together, have you had to work with bare wires? If you have then it sounds like they are not insulated adequately and are shorting out as you try and push the stereo into position.

Both of the Omegas I've driven have needed the ashtray and 1/2 the dash removing to get enough room to slide the stereo all the way home.

If you are hardwiring it into the loom, my guess is that you have got it wrong and blown the stereo, and even if you have now got it right, the stereo is still blown.

Wiring adaptors are readily available to make installation easy.

Sounds like a temporary happy moment.  Dont go over any speed bumps soon or you'll just have that diesel lump to listen to!  :P

If you are not experienced enough to KNOW that everything is good, then get a friend or pay for someone to cast an eye over it.  It could save you a fortune in the long-run  :y
