gen vauxhall towbar electrics
« on: 28 August 2011, 12:33:08 »

my 2.5 diesel est has a gen twin electric towbar fitted. the vehicle is ex vauxhall when new. i have changed both 12n and 12s sockets (towsure items). upon checking all is ok i now have no rear indicators, the front and wing bulb flash as if bulbs not working with nothing at rear on, :-? but all work on hazards. when i put my foot on the brake pedal the buzzer sounds as if i am indicating. to use the car i have pluged car harnis straight into the lamp units, the and all is well. the gen vauxhall fitting kit is used through out the car.

my question is, does the car need tec 2 programing or have i missed some thing stupid! i coppied all wire possitions to the new sockets so i could have gone wrong! your knowlage and guidence is always taken.

if all else fails its off to towbar place and state stupidity :-?

Check the earth. When I fitted my electrics they were doing bizarre things to say the least. I removed the trim again and the earth had worked loose. Connected it again and all ok

the unit does not have the normal 7 coloured wires as i am use to. there seems to be more and none with colours i know. all the earth wires are tight but not opened up the socket yet to see inside. have bought a new 12n and 12s.

Presumably if the wiring was factory fit, then the wires colours will follow the usual GM colour codes and NOT the red, yellow, blue, white etc that's used for an aftermarket 12N plug/socket.

you are correct. no red white blue yellow etc, colours are black/white or green/black etc. i have coppied all possitions from old to newsocket but have the problems as stated in my first post! i would like to keep the factory kit as it is well fitted and not a bodge job.

Where does your towbar wiring connect to your car's? There's a socket behind the rear trim panel at the back of the boot, but my GM towbar loom connects via a plug/socket at the tail lights.
you say you've changed the 12N with a Towsure item. How've you done that  :-/ because as far as I remember a GM 12N socket has its connections crimped directly. It sounds as if you've dropped a testicle when fitting the Towsure socket.  ;)

all the gm wiring conect to a box behind the n/s/r lamp unit. the vehicle wires conect to the box and the box fits the car. all items stamped gm. at the plug socket the wires were simple pushed into small holes and held in place with small screws, as i have alway seen, nothing crimped at the socket? i have replaced with an identical 12n socket as removed, (fog light cut off as well).

I don't remember mine being as a 'normal' aftermarket 12N socket, also designed for 8 wires - the extra wire for the fog light cut off.  :-/
