Will a new head unit fit?
« on: 03 September 2011, 17:55:02 »

Hi guy's, just looking through my latest copy of Total Vauxhall and noticed an Astra Van with a CD30 MP3 head unit fitted. I was just wondering if one of these would fit into/work with my Omega F/L.
Obviously both are double din head units, so would the CD30 plug straight in?
Would i still be able to use my steering wheel buttons?
Would i have to put in a AUX port for MP3 player use as it does not seem to have a jack in the front of the head unit?
If so where would i find the required leads/jacks?
 :-? :-? :-? :-?
Hope you can help guy's. Thanks.

Why oh why was there never a V8 Omega????
Such a missed oppurtunity.
Look forward to the Cadillac ATS & ATS-V. Maybe a re-badged one will replace the Miggy as a RWD runner?

I think the CD30 uses CANbus for all sorts of things (such as when the ignition is switched on and to talk to the display and controls).

The Omega doesn't have the necessary CANbus to make the radio work. :(

What does a stereo head in an Omega have instead of Canbus? ::)

For ign+ the Omega uses a full fat wire with 12volts on it.

For backlighting the Omega uses another wire with 12volts on it.
(it might go through the dimmer rheostat first)

For the display on most Omegas they use the same old 10 digit interface that GM have been using since the 1980's .

The NCDC head units are the exception because they do have a tiny bit of CANbus that links to the display (but doesn't connect to much else)

Sadly most of this is double dutch to me, but i am still keen to find out if there is a head unit that will fit the current set up either with or able to have attached, a MP3 port? :-?

There is no OEM Vauxhall stereo that will do what you want.

You can retro fit an aftermarket one, and steering control interfaces are available (£40) for the more reputable models to allow connection to your steering controls. The display interfaces are very expensive (£100+) and only apply to a handfull of stereos, so most people elect to lose the display when retro fitting.
