A little birdie has told me that this year there's gona be a zero tolerance on speeding, so 1mph over & you get caught, you get done.
Anyone else heard owt, i don't listen to rumours, but when it comes to my as of yet 25 years of a clean licence, i sit up & listen.

And rightly so

 Red ringed limits, the 10%+2 is about right, IMHO... for enforcement, rather than safety reasons (but I'm not going to get into the driver education argument).
 However, I don't call the NSL roundels FOQ signs for nothing...

 To quote the late Paul Smith, safe driving simply cannot be measured in miles per hour.

Its lack of skill thats the big factor. Ive been known to have a bit of a heavy right foot, but ive also been taught a lot of car control from rally drivers / ex=traffic etc so know what im doing. For the 6 years (god im that old ) ive been driving i havnt even had one accident. and on the same topic, ive lost count of the number of accidents i have avoided by taking avasive action.

im not saying speeding is safe but speed alone cant be blamed for accidents.

The only time ive been caught speeding the traffic officers said "conditions are clear, road was clear, you were in no way driving dangerously but..... your still going to court" thanks officer   lol

You mean there are speed restrictions in the UK, surely not, that proposterous i tell ya,
to be honest as a father of 3, i believe in speed regulation, any one who deviates from the speed limits deserves punishment but not to the degree that drivers are tho, they are there for a reason, safety, i thing suburban limits should be reduced to 25 not 30 and 15 near schools, Limits on the motorways should be raised by 15 mph to 85, its safer to travell at a higher speeds than slower on a fast moving highway

I blame the casual speeding in surburban roads on "gear progression"; many (not all, obviously) people with 'manual' cars with 5/6 ratio`s work-up through the box and instead of staying in a gear appropriate for conditions/posted limits they blindly head for top-gear and inevitably end up 'having' to speed to stop the car lugging along.

`Lived in the`States for 20 years; 20 MPH posted limits around town/suburbs is common; and having seen an auto versus (elderly) pedestrian at that speed it REALLY is fast enough.

I don`t know the ins and outs of driving speed miss-perception, but I went through some resurfacing roadworks today on a 2 lane road usually posted at 50 MPH and the limit was posted at 10 MPH; `which felt 'stupidly and needlessly' slow actually, until a bloke walked suddenly out from between a road roller and a truck in front of the car ahead of me...no problem the car simply stopped short.....at 20 MPH it might have been a different story; and at 50 MPH `would`ve been certainly fatal.

Don't think it's possible... too many parameters that can have effect on a speedo...  rolling circumference of the tyres being the prime one... many speedo's read 30mph and the actual speed is around 28mph that's all with standard wheels n' tyres.  In Staffordshire the tolerance is 8mph across the speed range..  it's a fact!  mobile laser and static Gatso's are all programmed as such.  There was a myth that 10% +2 was the allowance... apparently never so!  Also if you sit in a car and you're a short arse the angle of incidence of your view of a needle type speedo will read higher than a driver high in the cabin...

We'd all need calibrated speedo's...  or GPS speedo's...  even then there's going to be a certain level of tollerance...

There was a myth that 10% +2 was the allowance... apparently never so!

 That's the official ACPO guideline for when to take action - that is, if you haven't issued a FPN or summons yet, you should start at 10%+2 with an FPN.
