Cambers causing tyre wear!!
« on: 29 February 2008, 14:43:11 »

I have had a second tyre blow out in the space of three months. Just got my second new tyre today and the garage informed me that this is common on Omega's.  It’s something to do with the cambers as the wheels are slightly tilted inwards, causing more wear on the inner wall than the rest of the tyre.  Has anyone else experienced this and what have your done to put this right??

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum.

I would say its because the suspension is set up wrong. Depending on where you are in the country, it would be worth a visit to Wheels in Motion to get yours set up correctly ;)

Yep, certainly have and it's a bugger to get right on mine as the wheels and tyres aren't standard. I've been to WIM for 4 wheel geometry which vastly improved it but I need to go back there for a more customised setup.

I don't think blowouts are some much a common problem but the uneven tyre wear can be unless the geometry is set correctly.

I expect  people glance at their tyres, think "these look ok"....

whereas in reality, if they look closer, the inner edge is on the canvas!!

Spot on James, exactly what happened to me last year. Mine was down to the steel belt on the inner edge whereas the rest of the tyre looked perfectly ok!! :o
Probably would have resulted in a blowout if my mechanic hadn't of spotted it when the car was up on the ramp.

In-correct camber will cause tyre edge wear (inner if to much camber and outer if to little).

The camber will also change as the car ages and the springs get weaker....so, get your camber set as part of a proper geometry setup and all will be good again.

That’s exactly what my tyre was like...down to the steel belt, except I didn't spot it, hence the blow out.  Just annoying when the rest of the tyre is perfectly fine, yet the inner edge wears away, especially at the prices we all pay.... I have the big chunky low profile tyres!!!!

Yes, I've experienced horrific inner shoulder wear on the front of my MV6, all put right by wheels-inmotion as suggested about.

Couldn't agree more.  I tend to get mine fully geo'd instead of track/4 wheel alignment, and tend to do annually.  Should be more often if I let Mrs TheBoy drive  :-X

I spent a fortune on tracking and 4 wheel alignments and, despite what the tyre outlets were telling me, its a waste of money in many cases.

Both my Omegas are due, just waiting for the new WIM centre to open.

I spoke to Tony by e-mail today and he reckons it might not be for another 3 weeks yet. :-?
