When you jacked it up and turned wheel did you hold drive shaft? if wheel moved and shaft was still(slack) then thats ya problem - drive shaft.

No I didn't hold it, but I could see that the driveshaft wasn't moving when the wheel was! and when I checked the drivers side there was play there as well. I waggled the wheel with my foot and stuck my head near the gearbox.  The clacking sound seemed to come from where the driveshaft goes into the gearbox....

If that makes sense?  ::)

I'll check again tomorrow, and will hold my shaft while waggling!!  :D  Cheers Symes  :y

It turned out that 'The noise' was caused by a sheared gearbox mounting bolt, so there was some serious vibrations when driven hard!!!  :y

That sounds like a result, to me! Cheaper than a new gearbox/driveshaft/clutch/etc ;)

Which is no real surprise really... Sounds like it's been thrashed to within an inch of its life though :( :(

Yes definately a result!!  :)  and yes It's probably been well thrashed!!  :o  Stupid car to buy at the auctions really, but I had a WTF moment!  ::)

The good news is that I will at least break even on this one and hopefully might make a small profit!!  :y
