first time i am on call....
« on: 08 March 2008, 11:17:14 »

And our VPN/Web Mail has gone t!ts up!

Logged in ok last night, but this morning no joy. Looks like the office has either lost power or our ADSL router has crashed.

I can still check our systems to see if anything has gone wrong, but if it has, i can do sod all without the VPN!

I did offer to go in and fix it (£100 per hour) call out at weekends  8-)

But they sent someone closer  :(

Nothing will help if the router has died.  Whatever tool you use, if the packets don't get there.......

We have no connection into the office what so ever... as mentioned logmein.com, will do nothing!

I remote desktop anyway... which is faster.

827 and 837 DSL routers are normally rock solid, though if you're running PIX on them as well, its easy to gobble all the memory.

Don't get me started !

Our networking company put a loan 1700 on one of our sites as a temporary workaround, the VPN traffic utilised 100% of the CPU cos a 1700 doesn't have a hardware VPN encryption option.

I was on holiday, when I came back I went mental !!

So either you have no power or the router has done the big firework.

Assuming your config is saved to start-up then when the power comes back you could get in as the router will reboot

VPN without VPN hardware is always going to be problematic due to amount of processing required (and most low end routers have modest processing capabilities).  Suicidal turning software VPN on unless its just for very, very occasional access - better off putting VPN hardware beyond the router, and letting that do the work, if your infrastructure will allow, assuming the option to replace router is not available.

LOL, number of times some of our network teams have forgotten to save the running config (its automatically tftp'd off regularly) is unbelievable.  We lost a cisco 12000 the other day, chassis failure, and the config that we had been storing was not the current....

Mustn't blame the network boys - the unix boys are as bad, changing running config, forget (or make a mistake) in doing the startup files  :-[

Need a UPS to hold out whilst genny gets wound up to speed.  Ours at work are about 20mins I believe to get started and up to speed.  That would explain the massive floor full of batteries!

Aledgedly, each of our 6 gennys at the DC I work at can power the entire town.  Which would explain the size and number of electric feeds we have coming in.  Who would have though a 'few' computers could use so much electric  :-X
